Brake Issue Question

Recently my brakes have been acting up. When coming to a slow stop, It feels like the brakes catch on something at an evenly spaced interval. I assume the rotors need to be machined. I took my 4runner to the brake place this morning and they tell me that my pads are fine and that my rotors are warped because my calipers are very dirty and are not working correctly.

He tells me that he can machine the rotors and then take apart and clean the calipers for $370, and it should solve the problem.

Is this a good deal or do I have any other options. I do have experience working on cars but not too much brake experience. Is this something I could fix myself and then have them machine my rotors?

Thanks for any help

THats alot of money.. I would just replace the calipers with new and put new rotors on then bleed the system. Probably cost you 200 in parts at the most.

Replacing the calipers is very easy, the only part that could cause you problems is bleeding the brake system afterwards. If you feel comfortable doing that then I would get some rebuilt calipers, stick them on and take the rotors in to get turned. Or depending on the cost even get new ones.

And even if the mechanic says the pads are OK I would replace them, pads are cheap and you have to take then off anyway. Using old pads with newly turned rotors isn't a good idea.

Yeah, just get some new calipers from Autozone, Checkers, etc. Very easy to do. Bolt off, bolt on.

i wouldnt pay the mechanic to do my brakes. one of the easier things to do on any vehicle, above an oil and filter change. if you have a service manual on your vehicle its pretty self explanatory.
