:pat: I have a 1998 2WD SR5 whose motor just came apart on me. I had put 200K on an 80s extra-cab and so expected to get more than 115K out of my 4-Runner. I have never heard of anything like it. I have always run semi-syn "high milage" oil and a K&N oil filter. The most recent project was the timing belt, water pump, thremostat, tranny fluid & screens, and spark plugs at 109K. There was no rattle like I would expect to hear if a rod failed. There was no oil pressure lamp or CEL as I would expect to see if an oil line gave up. It just blew up. It's been pampered, is just a kid mover for the anti-minivan wife, and has never towed antyhing. The only oddity I can think of is that the engin would surge a bit during acceleration when cold. I thought this was due to the throttle body spacer since it promised torque gain and it did not seem to hurt anything. Can anyone help me figure out what happened? Toyota customer care did not seem to and would not allow me to speak to an engineer. Ironically, I went to get the replacement motor in my old 1985 22R powered extra cab!

 

So you're putting a 22R in a 3rd gen?

 

What kind of oil change intervals were you running??? 6000+miles??? I have always run all my vehicles at 4000 KMS... so 2500ish miles.... but Im a maintance freak....

What actually came apart??? I have seen cams sieze many times on these....

Also too, so you know, a semisynthetic oil can be classified that with only 10% synthetic refinied... you are better of to go full synth, or not bother ot all....

 

I'm in the same boat as you - maintenance freak, and you're better in balls deep or nothing. Full Synthetic or bust.

 

Yiiks! That's not good. What exactly do you mean by the eng. "blew up" ? Is it sieze up now? What happens when you try to crank it over? If it does not crank over, try turning it at the frt. crank bolt. Is there oil or coolant leaking out of the eng.?
If it won't turn , now your in for alot of work, or dig deep in your pocket.
What eng. do you have ?
