BFG's Tread seperation???

BFG's Tread seperation???

Well my friends little sister was driving a 2nd gen on the highway with BFG AT's that were about 1 year old. And the tread seperated causing her to swerve and hit the concrete barracade and flip. It was a pretty bad accident that actually scalped her and broke her neck. But she is fine luckily.

I was just wondering if anyone has heard of BFG's tread seperation. Her lawyer is actually working with two other people with BFG AT's tread seperation problem.

I just got set and it's making me a little scared. I just wanted to get some input from you guys.

hmmm....the a/t's used to be known to have a pretty crappy sidewall, but they fixed that problem with the new a/t KO.

Was her's a KO? And I haven't heard anything about tread seperating. Strange.

she bought them less than a year ago. So aren't they all KO for the last year? I am not sure.....But regardless this shouldn't happen on regular highway driving. Looks like this might just be a couple in million incidents....

I've put over 95K miles on BFG AT's. One set of "regular", one set of KO's. No problems at all.

Had the tire ever been repaired? If so, she is most likely SOL. Tread separations can happen with any tire particularly ones that have been repaired or have been driven low on air. The reason tires separate is that steel and rubber do not stick to well together.

A few people up here in Vancouver have had that problem. There is a thread posted on www.BC4x4.com about this very thing. It factored into my thinking when i bought my Revo's yesterday.

Glad she's OK. I've had 2 sets of regular and 2 sets KO's with zero problems. These all saw a lot of off roading. I ran them all untill they were almost bald. Now my friend had a set of tires (not BFG T/A's) that seperated. The place he bought them had sold him new tires that were actually retreads. They seperated and torn his fenders all to crap. Some tire shops are pretty shady. Ive just had new tires put on and 2 had 20lbs and 2 had 50 lbs pressure. This will heat up the tires and cause seperation. I always figured either the people doing the work were stupid or they figured you wouldn't check pressure and this would cause the tires to were out quickly. Then they can charge you for new tires.

Rotation?

Sketchy, but I'm glad to hear she is OK. It always make me nervous when I see rolled 4x's. Always a increased number in foul weather. Last thurs here in the mid atlantic I passed a 4runner sitting on its roof on the side of the road during our little early season snow drill. I think the soccer moms feel 4 wheel drive is like having a majic carpet. I still slowed it down a knotch or two after seeing that. Back to the topic, it was recommended to me whem getting my bfg's long trails to only rotate the tire front to rear as if the were directional tires to minimize the possibility of tread seperation. This was from merchants tire co. which is not a fly by night tire shop but wether there was any basis for this recomendation or the installer was a old school cat who was still giving 1970's advice or not I dont know. It seems that it used to be the case that all tires were rotated to maintain the same direction but with modern techniques and manufactoring the tire companys claim this is no longer the issue. I rotate my own and because I dont have a Hydrylic lift at home its easier to jack one side of the truck at a time for front to rear rotation instead of having to have all 4 wheels suspended for the Toyota recomended criss cross rotation. I suppose it could be done with jack stands in the front and the jack in the rear?

phosho, That is how I do mine. I jack up the front and put jack stands under. Then I jack the back up under the diff. All four can be rotated at once. I do the cross tire from front to back. It helps with the angled edges from the front tires turning. They get run backwards which flatens them down. I know KO's can be run either way as with most tires nowadays.
