I took my flares off for their annual cleaning. I've always noticed the ring that is left on the fenders from where they rub on the metal, but I noticed today that it is actually going right through the paint. I'm wanting to just leave the flares off all together, but they look so much better on.

On a side note, anyone know what the purpose of the plastic piece is that is on the lower corner of the rear fenders just in front of the rear tires? (other than trapping dirt and salt behind it). I don't know if they're on 4runners, but the 89-95 trucks definitely have it. What is it for???

 

It's a stone guard. It is great at making that area rust over time.

 

I took mine off, looks better I think.

get some gasketing material that they use on the new Tacoma flares and put that under your flares...use the passenger rear material as it is the longest and doesn't have the gas tank lid in the way of it....works well to stop the rubbing...

taking off that stone guard leaves a hole that you can see daylight through from the inside, so plug it up if you take them off....

 

someone suggested silcione where the flare meets the fender. i might try that.

Get the gasketing material Toyota puts on the Tacos and get the rear passenger flare gasket material as it is the longest...(5) of those should do (4) regular flares easy...somebody has a write-up on it in the tech section...try there for specifics...I hope that helps

I'd personally say just buy the factory flares and put them on. Only thing is unless you know somebody that can get you a deal on these they're wayyy too expensive. Perfect fit but way expensive.
