which is better?
hey, what do yall think would be better for some hardcore off-roading in colorado, a heavily modified 3rd gen, or a 1st gen like this one. THe 1st gen would only be a 4cylinder though. THanks!

What do you mean by *heavily*??
And if the 1st Gen has a live axle up front. Then I would definitly pick the 1st Gen.
Also because 3rd's are too nice to scratch and dent.

What sort of trails?
I have done a lot of the "hard" trails in Colorado with a double locked IFS truck on 33's. The next step is roll-overs and body damage.
Jeff's truck has done all the hard trails in Colorado with 33's and IFS.
If it is also a daily driver, the 3rd Gen is hard to beat. Set it up to wheel and you can still have a nice warm rig in winter. A couple lockers, maybe a crawler and 33's will get you in a lot of places plus drive decent on the road.
If it is for more rock crawling trail only driving, the 1st Gen has a stronger aftermarket and since you will be less concerned about body damage, you can wheel on the roll-over and thrash trails.

hey, yea i would only get a 1st gen if it had the SAS. You see the thing is , is that I dont know how hard of trails i will be doing. So far I have only off-roaded my 2wd CR-V, and beating the crap out of it on some tuff trails for a car of its sort. I am just so addicted to the idea of hard core off-roading, and to 4runners. I guess a 3rd gen would be good, but I would be very scared to break it because I am a novice and would probably attempt hard trails! The 3rd gen is really too expensive for me, as a freshman in college. Thanks!

I'd go for the 1st gen. I think it'd be more fun to take wheeling & you wouldn't worry about wrecking it.
I think that one has a solid axle up front, I think I see leaf springs up front in that picture.
