I know this is a beaten subject, but I need some clarification on this matter. On sonoran steel website I found my code "vzn185l-gkpgka"

Which translates to any of these:
VZN185L-GKPGKA 3.909
VZN185L-GKPGKA 4.100 With P265/70R16
VZN185L-GKPGKA 4.300 Option

I have a 98 SR5 3.4, auto 4x4. When I bought my rig last year it had the 16" wheels with 265/70/16 tires on it, but my door sticker only gives air pressure for the 15" wheel set up. So does that mean my truck originally had 15's on it, and should have 3.909 gears, or should I go with the factory 16's it had on it, and assume it might have the 4.10, and how would I know if it had the 4.30 option or not?

 

Go with the tire size on the label that would be the one it came with.

 

On the passenger side door jamb look for the RPO code and look on Roger Brown's site for the translation.

 

That's the thing, i didn't find anything on the passenger door other than the VIN.

 

did it come with a tow package? i've got the same code, but my jamb decal says 265's. mines a LTD w/ elocker. i think the 4.30's came mostly on 3.4 ltd's (all auto's). i'd be willing to be its got the 4.10's on it...

its bloody confusing trying to decipher what gears are in what...and doing the spin & count is hardly accurate, especially when dealing with such close numbers. why cant they just put it on the ID sticker?!?

I have a 2000 4Runner that I bought in 2003 and the jamb decal says I have P225/75R15 tires. Luckily, I found the original window sticker in the glove box. It states that I have "Upgrade package #4" which consists of,along with other upgrades, P265/70R16 tires w/alloy wheels,13" brakes, 4.10 rr diff.

 

Look on the the drivers door Jamb, or on the drivers door itself. There is a white credit card sized plate with this info on it:

C/TR
A/TM

C=Color of truck
TR=Trim code
A=Axle code
TM=Transmission code

Find that A, and let us know so we can tell you your ratio.

 

I am just went through this and i have a Gear ratio Chart from INCHWORM. I thought the same thing (3.4, V-6, 5Spd) but this is what they told me. The real test will be when i get my 3rd from them and actually read the gears. Hope this helps.

i need help and was wondering if anybody knew anything about this situation. I have a 98 4runner sr5 3.4L 5spd 4x4. I wanted to look up part numbers for carrier bearings for my detroit install. autozone and other places were asking me alot of questions that i didn't know the answers to. (what size ring gear, etc). anyways I was looking at the door jamb sticker and trying to analyze it and it only opened up a can of worms and a ton of questions.

i used these sites to help to decode it but it doesn't come up with something specific and on the money.

as you can see it says 15 inch rims, but my toyota came with 16 inch, and i've tried putting 15's on in the past but it didn't fit.

but to the main point, the A=A03A. isn't there supposed to be a letter followed by 3 numbers??? i'm trying to figure out what size my ring gear is so i can get the right carrier bearings for my detroit install. if anyone knows anything and will chime in it would be greatly appreciated.

Last digit:
A = 2 Pinion, Open
B = 4 Pinion, Open

some '98-00 models have shown a BO code of "???" on the door plate; so far this turns out to be a 3.91 gear ratio.

Ok, I've come to believe that the first part of the document is for earlier 4Runners and pickups, as our axle codes are not A###, but are A##A. So I've got to think that we'd fall under the 'Tacoma' listing which hits the axle codes right on the head with the A##A format. I double checked this with another site http://www.brian894x4.com/Gearratiosanddiffs.html, and their '1990 through Today' data is the same.

SO! Looks like we both have the same axle code A03A, which translates into 7.5" 4:10 2 Pinion Open diffs. HOWEVER, I'm more apt to believe that the 7.5" refers to the FRONT, and not the REAR differential after reading this page: http://home.4x4wire.com/erik/diffs/ It lists all V6 rears as 8", and to check this, Randys Ring & Pinion has this to offer: http://www.ringpinion.com/DiffDetail...%3dToyota%2bV6

yeah i've seen that document in one of the sights. the only information that matches is the tacoma info. but i know for a fact i have a 8" v6 diff with adjuster nuts, 10 ring gear bolts and not a tacoma 8.4 12 bolt shim design.

 

Axles codes give me a headache. I'd kill for a GM-style axle tag right about now...

If it's any help to people, I have been able to figure out axle codes for all 3rd gen 4Runners:

A01A 3.73
A02A 3.91
A03A 4.10
A04A 4.30
A05A 4.56

Those were the only available options for 96-02 4Runners.

As for Tacomas or any other type of vehicle, no clue. But those are 100% for sure accurate for 96-02 4Runners

 

'00 4 Runner 4WD w/ E-Locker, non Sport Package - A04A code.

Wonder what option package would have got 4.56's ??

I'm late to the party here, but how are you 100% sure? I haven't read through all the old threads in a few years, but as I remember there were some inconsistencies with the axle codes and the gear ratio (as in people with the same code had different ratio's). Don't get me wrong, It'd be great if that x-reference is correct, and it does actually match mine, but it'll be hard for me to trust such a table after all the research I did on it...

I hope you really do have the holy grail here, but I have been hurt so many times in the past, it's just hard to trust again, you know?

 

I am 100% certain. I have personally checked 30+ rigs (I part them out) and compiled a list of every one and counted the teeth. For 96-02 4Runners, I am 100% sure.
