I picked up a set for my door lights. The are pretty decent output, about like the 3 watt bulb that was in there. They are nowhere near the brightness of the 1 watt Luxeon LED done light I have:





Although for the price, not that bad. The 6-LED lamp pulls 60 mA of current,a bout 720 milli-watts, so about 25% of the 3W bulb. The Luxeon LED + driver board pulls about 80 mA but puts out more light that the 10W festoon bulb does. If you stare at it, it'll leave a blind spot in your field of view for a minute or so. Of course at $35-40 a pop, it better be bright!

Yep, he lives about a mile or two from me. The Luxeon LED is driven at 350 mA of current via a constant current DC-DC converter at something like 3-4 volts. It is bonded to a heat sink to dissapate the heat. The regular LEDs (like in the 6-bulb festoon housing) only pull about 60 mA current.

I like the 6-bulb LED in the door lights, though. Throws enough light to see and yet does not seem to affect night vision that much. I had been running a 10W bulb in the passenger side and that was a little too bright. The LEDs can be aimed to point down a bit and since they have their own reflectors, no need to rely on the crappy molded plastic imitation reflector behind the bulb.

Finally finished up my 1st gen interior lighting project. Besides the Luxeon dome light and 6-LED door lights, the rear deck light was modified to work w/o the rest of the lights being on:

LED's are the wave of the future. 10,000 hours continuous operation tested to date with no failures. They just keep on tickin'...They're a s**tload tougher than a filamented bulb too! I have numerous LED flashlights and have, as a demonstration/test thrown them across rooms, parking lots whatever, slammed them down on pavement as hard as I could, run them over with my truck, you name it. A few little dings in the cases was the only effect all that had. Try THAT with a filamented light! And they use so much less power. I have a single AA battery light I use all the time (I HATE overhead lights at night...long story) and I only have to replace the battery once a month or so. Anytime I change a bulb in my trucks they get LEDs. A lot of trucking companies are replacing their tail/running lights with LEDs, so they won't ever have to again in all probability. Cities are replacing traffic lights with LED versions too, for both the power savings and the longevity.
Step up into the 1990's! Use LEDs now!

I like the lighting upgrade Roger...I think I'll do something similar with my 3rd gen. Where did you buy the LED strip? I assume there is no inverter and they just used the correct number of LEDs for a 12-14V system?

I am planning on using 4" white cold cathode (ccfl) tubes under the dash and rear seats to add extra light.

I used a 60-LED unit from Grizzly.com. It is hardwired to a 12VDC transformer so that needs to be cut off and a lighter plug added. I added a 12V socket to the transformer and that way you can use it off 120V at home and 12V in the truck:

I'm looking to find a red led dome light because red doesn't affect your night vision. The one i'm looking for I doubt they sell or make because I want one that would light up the entire cab.

You can get the festoon LEDs in red, or try putting a red filter inside the dome light bezel to color the light with a brighter white LED.

Only problem leds aren't bright.

I'm talking bright as the red lights in an army helicopter.

Does the Luxeon come in red? I know the 1watt Lux is pretty bright, and the 3 watt Lux has a light radiation warning, it is so bright.

Or just get a red festoon bulb (incandescent). Put a 10W bulb in and it'll put out a decent amount of light.
