I bought a TRD cooler, just because it has the installiation brackets. I am not sure if the universal coolers have brackets that fit the 4runner. I found mine for $175 but that was back in Jan. www.toyotaparts4u.com

I bought my brackets at Pep Boys. They carry a lot of unversal fitting accessories for the Hayden products. I was able to locate mine right behind the grille for 100% cooling efficiency, rather than behind the bumper as TRD illustrates.

when going for an oil cooler i take it you stop using the existing one that is in the bottom of the main rad or is it just my odd one that has that ? and also what are the opinions of going for an electric fan and removing the one from the front of the engin?any one care to comment?

Hey Dukestr,
Yah, the Hayden tranny cooler is a lot cheaper (~$70 @ PepBoys, I've seen it online for $55 though...).. I think it's model 0679...
Here....check out this link Tranny cooler ... $51, what a deal... I think #1679 should fit in there... get the biggest one you can fit in there...
I got mine at PB's 'cause I was in a hurry.. but the kit comes with one 3' hose, you'll need another 3' hose (return and send)...
The Hayden kit has a cheesey mounting system though (basically, zip ties).. so you got to fabricate something... (which makes the TRD kit nice..but it's kinda expensive)..
What I did was walk around PepBoys.. you can find these rubber bushing things.. I think I got either the 1/2" bushing or 1"... and then got some straight metal brackets w/holes in them from Home Depot.. and made some mounts... then all you need is a few screws and some washers...some split loom (look at HBoss's page for Hayden, jacksonpt's page for TRD)...
I wish I could send you pics, this probably makes no sense... the metal brackets allow a side to side motion so that you can mount the cooler to that horizontal bar behind the grille w/o drilling holes into it...
Ah well...you have to look under there to figure it out..if you have any Q's ask

That would be really cool, because I am interested in the location that you chose to put your cooler in, I have never heard of anyone putting it there before.
Thanks

Will do. I might be a while though. I've been really busy at work looking at variuos software companies to replace our existing system. I might be sick and dillusional, but its actually been kinda fun/interesting.
A lot of times, work goes home with me.

There has been lots of discussion about tranny coolers. Only difference between the Hayden and TRD units (besides price) is the TRD comes with better mounting hardware, and the Hayden comes with better installation instructions. I have an installation write-up for the TRD unit on my website, and I know there are a couple of Hayden write-ups floating around. Both are good units, but the TRD unit does not affect the warrantee if installed by a dealer.
