Audio Questions

Now that I have the coils and stuff, I was wondering about a good audio set up.

I wanna use my factory head unit (save some money), but I want two 12's in the back. I was wondering which was a better brand, Memphis or Kicker. My buddy has two Memphis 12's and I think its a 1000W amp.

I am looking to see the best brand and what the entire setup would cost. I wanna buy a box cause I know next to NOTHING about building them.

Thanks for the help guys!

Subs

I got a MTX 12" with a box and a Kenwood amp pushing it for around $350 installed. I have no idea what the specific numbers are as far as makes and stuff. The sub was $79, the box $59 and the amp whatever the difference is. MORE than enough bass rattling around in the 4Runner. MORE than enough. Next I'll upgrade my factory speakers.

What wattage is that amp? Does it make sense to put an amp in with more than enough power to be able handle more subs and stuff?

Also, from my past experiences Kenwood stuff has sucked...but thats just me. What's a good amp brand?

Thanks wabbit!

Depends. Which models? L7s, L5s, mojos? Are you looking for anything in particular?

I know nothing about audio, I just want a good deep bass that I will actually be able to feel...but won't shatter my windows or require me to put in some plexiglass ones. I really know nothing about amps or subs or anything...any help would appreciated!

Thx

Check out..

I would check out different folks websites on here. I know Corey has a write-up about his as do several others. You ought to be able to get some good ideas from there.

Just don't make it so loud that people in their car next to you are going like this

Well, don't worry about your windows. It will take a hell of alot more to blow them then you think. Steve, bumpin yota, hasn't had a problem even when he had a wall(i think). I had 2 12" and a 1000 watts and it hit. I would suggest the kicker L5s in a ported box with a 1000 watt amp. Tune the port down to about 31 hz and you will fell the bass.

What is your budget? Based on that I can recommend some kick ass stuff for you. I don't believe that the stock HU has the necessary outputs for external amps, your best bet is to start with a decent HU with 4 volt outputs and then expand from there. One 12" sub would be plenty given it is a decent sub/box/amp combo.

What would be a good one sub setup? Could I use that my factory HU with just one sub?

Thanks for the replies guys!!

Fink,

I have redone the entire system in my 92 and will say that you don't want to keep that head unit. If at all possible, save up for an aftermarket one as it will mean worlds of difference.

As far as subs go, I have a 12" Boston Acoustics ProSeries sub powered by a 200W Alpine amp and it hits hard. I know it's only 200W but the sub is incredibly efficient and is plenty loud.

At some point, you will probably want to switch out the speakers for some aftermarket ones as well. The fronts are fairly easy to change out, the rears are not.

Let me know what you decide to do and I will walk you through stuff such as where to run the power wire, where to ground, etc.

I would like to copy Corey and get the Sony M650 HU, that thing is awesome!

But...I dunno if I can afford that right now.

This is all probably gonna happen later down the road, so we will see.

Thanks for the help guys, and if anybody else has any more suggestions about brands, setups, number of subs, wattages or whatever...gimme a shout I will ALWAYS welcome new ideas for audio. I am serious audiophile, I have music going practically 24/7..so..yeah.

Nope, blowing out windows is REALLY hard. I was doing legal 159.8 @ 42hz which is REALLY violent and my chipped windsheild just laughed the entire time it was flexing 3/4". lol

As far as which brand is better, Kicker or Memphis, which of these two is better, Chevy or Ford? Same deal applies. Both make great equipment.

As far as what you want, it sounds like you are after primary soundquality, so I'd recommend a pair of sealed IDQ12s with about 500 watts behind them. If you want to stick with either Kicker or Memphis, I'd have to recommend the Kicker CompVR's, simply becuase I am not familiar with anything from memphis other than the LVS subs.

As far as aftermarket stuff, AVOID SONY!!!!!!!!!!!!! Whatever you do, do NOT buy Sony. It is total crap that doesn't last - even their home audio stuff won't last longer than 2 years.

Look at Alpine or Eclipse or Nakamichi (or pioneer if you must) for head units.

I'd also recommend the kicker comp VR. The solobaric is nice, too. What kind of music do you listen to, and how do you want it to sound? Do you want it to hit hard, or just complement your music? It's the difference between 2 12"s and 1000 watts, and a single 10" and 300 watts... I currently have a single 10 compVR, but only because I've been too lazy to build my second box for my other 10, and I'm running them off a 500 watt amp. I'm more of the "complement your music" type of listener...

Hey, Sony isn't that bad... Their CDX-C90 is really nice and the old school CDX-91 changer is really nice as well. Of course, I kind of biased since I use both... I know what you mean though. I want to get an MP3 changer, too, and all their new Xplod changers are so tacky looking... Whatever happened to KISS and elegance?? :pat:

I don't want it so strong that on when you're at a stop light you think you're in California during an earthquake but, I just want it to complement I guess. Nothing TOO loud but I do LOVE bass..so nothing to shabby either.

I was thinking maybe 2 Kicker CompVR's and whatever adequate wattage I would need...but first I will need to get a HU. I will probably go with Alpine.

Thanks for the help guys, I will be sure to ask you guys if I have anymore questions.

I too had the same setup man, for about 9 years!!! The Sony stuff lasted that long under tremendous punishment. I never manually turned the Head Unit off, the cd changer is awesome as well. It had a digital output but I never used it. The HU finally crapped out on me this year, so I bought the Sony MP80, pretty nice lookin unit (4 volt out, motorized tray, 7 colors), but since it did not have XM capabilities I went with the Alpine 9815. I still have the MP80, and it's for sale, brand new in box, if you are interested PM me.

I'm in the process of hooking up new subs, Adire Brahma 12", I heard great things about them in terms of SQ. I'll post some pics and a review once they are installed. Good luck.

Haha, can't even remember at the moment where the off button is on the faceplate. I used the digital output for a while when I had an XDP-210EQ, but I hated that thing, and eventually got rid of it. I've heard the same of the brahma, and it seems like they're used a lot in home audio as well, but I've never heard one.

4x4Fink, I think you should get 1 or 2 12" CompVRs then, powered by anywhere from 500-1000 watts. 500 should be fine though, and it should still get plenty loud, but I'd aim for 750 just because they'd probably be a little more comfortable at that wattage.
