I recently picked up a 99 4Runner Limited and would like to put coilovers on it. I see most use Icon's or Stay A Ways. I have Stay A Ways on my Dodge and will never use them on anything again so they aren't a consideration. Anybody using the 2.5" Fox coilover with remote res? I'm not interested in the old 2"Fabtech/Fox just the new 2.5". Thanks for any constructive response.

 

Try sonoral steel or old man emu. You'll get a much better selection, as they make the lift per your truck. Fox coilovers is more of a custom company.

 

Fox actually has quite a bit of oem replacement stuff. I have checked out sonoran steel and want more shock than what he offers. If I only wanted to go slow on trails I would go sonoran steel but my 4Runner will see a decent amount of higher speed desert runs.

 

Nothing wrong with Fox, but I would go with the Icons. They have a rear shock for the 3rd gen 4runner.

Icon's valving, out of the box, is leaps and bounds above the fox oem replacment 2.5. I have worked on/drove trucks with King, Fox, Icon, and I have the sway a ways on my rig. And Icon is by far the best. When I say this I mean about a 2.5" dia C/O.

And as mentioned above, the Icon's rear shocks for the 3rd gen runners are tits. But also cost 800 bones.

 

The only thing I can think of is the valving not being right giving a harsh ride. At which point it is the users responsibility to valve them.

But yeah, Icon.. er donahoe did his homework when making those C/O's and when valving them.

 

The reason I don't like sway a ways is because they tend to leak like crazy and the shafts rust. It's a common problem they have due to looser machining tolerances than what you will find on King, Fox and Icon. Literally two of the four 3" shocks on my Dodge leaked out of the box. You can put new seals in them and they leak again, they just aren't made as well as the other brands. Look at what shocks desert race teams in Score and BITD use, you won't find anyone running up front with them.

My sway aways on my 4runner are about two years old,and about 6 months ago they started leaking,

I had camburg rebuild them and they seem to be okay for the moment

 

Not sure if you can see the pic, but my buddy is running them in his runner.
He hasnt really had a chance to take his rig out yet, but they do seem solid and well built..

 

Did you have fun pressing out the UBJ to install that uniball adapter?

 

Really easy haha.
used my bj press and he had the adapters in the freezer for a day. I had a harder time taking off the TRE's other than anything.

 

Huh. I didn't have much fun doing my upper ball joint a couple months back.

no doubt, very sexy. He wrote off his 08 or 09 taco and used the money and got this runner. i think last week he got his sliders on and waiting for his shrockworks bumper.
