Any major changes in performance after putting on 33"s?

Now that it's winter I get about 16mpg with short trips and nothing more than around town. In the summer I get around 18 if I don't drive too fast, and once while breaking in my new clutch shifting under 2500 rpms the whole tank I got about 20mpg.

man, there's a lot of messed up info on here.
the original poster has 94 4runner with 5 spd. stock gear for that truck depend on what original tires it came with.
for auto trans. 28" got 4.30, 31" got 4.88
for man. trans. 28" got 4.10 , 31" got 4.56.

In my 3.0 (5 spd) with 4.56 gears I went from about 17/19mpg to 16/20. It is noticable more sluggish around town but not undriveably so and fuel economy suffers about 1-2mpg or so depending on patience. On the highway if I stick to under 70mph then I actually get BETTER mileage due to the engine running at lower RPMs.

I can't give you a definitive answer on mileage but they look cool.

For the record I noticed a substantial difference between 33x10.50 and 33x12.50 as far as freeway ride and gas mileage.

There is a little loss of traction, but not that noticable.

I think the 9.50's might be a little too small. To me th3 9.50's are good for a compact spare. They would probably be even better if you do mainly street driving.

The guy has a 94 5 spd 4 Runner. Not a truck or a 3rd Gen with an auto.

He plans to run 33's. Not 285's, but not specifically 33x9.5's, 33x10.5's or 33x12.5's not to mention the 14.5" and wider varieties.

I ran 33x12.5's with a 3.0 and an auto as well as 5.29 gears and it would move all right. Now I have a 3.4 and it hauls.

The stick lets you get away with less gearing than the auto, but to do it right, you should regear it.

I think Anthony is the only person in the thread who has actually done what the poster was asking.

I will take that snipe and respond with the true statement that it makes not one bit of difference how this works on 3rd Gens with different engines, different trannies, different gears and different tires.

Thanks for playing.

Actually, it does make a difference, just not to this thread or the original poster. But to your original point, you're right - 3rd gen owners probably shouldn't be posting in this thread as it has gone quite a ways from where it should have.

There was a discreet question asked.

We are obligated to provide relevant answers.

Prefacing a response with "it is in a 3rd Gen, so take it for what it's worth" helps a lot for preventing confusion.

Saying what the stock gearing was in a rig that is not the sort of rig being considered confuses and detracts, much like this aside.
