My Stepson's 86 pickup has antifreeze leaking out of his exhaust manifold. I searched the threads, and it seems likely it is the dreaded blown HG.
It's the 22re 4 banger.
The entire top end was recently replaced befor he bought it, around 250000 miles.
Any suggestions would be great. We're kinda stuck.

Nope, But I know the guy he bought the truck from, he had it all done before he sold it to him. He deals with a lot of yotas.

 

where the bolts ever checked they may have worked them selfs losse

 

Did you pull the spark plugs and see if one looked like it was wet or different looking from the others, like it might have burning coolant?

 

sounds like a blown hg.... or a warped head, there is no other reason that the exhuast should be coming in contact with exhaust

 

Spark plugs were dry (crappy, but dry). The engine never got hot, no foam in the oil, coolant is clean. I'm hopeing it is just a one way leak in the HG.
I warned him at the least he will have to have the head machined and we will just replace the GH ourselves.

Sounds like a blown head gasket.Do a compression check if you want to double check it.If one cylinder has say 70lbs and the rest have 110lbs theres your problem.If the head was warped it would have been doing it right off the bat.They guy that did the work may not have tightened the head bolts proper.You have to do it in certain pattern with a T- wrench.Could be a cracked head but not likely.If you pull the head and look at the gasket you can see a burnt place between a cylinder and coolant hole in the block.owned one for 280,000 miles.Its a tough engine.If you wind up replacing the head gasket get a factory toyota gasket instead of aftermarket.Good luck with it and dont give up its probably minor.

 

also while you are doign the head gasket, replace the timing chain, guides and water pump if you unsure of their condition or if they havent been done in awhile..... as the radiator and all that stuff will be already off, its maybe an extra 3 hours of work but will save tons of work and $ now rather than later

 

Yeah ,we will check it all, but it was all recently replaced. I told him to expect the worst, but I'm keepin' my fingers crossed.

Early year 22r heads can crack at the exhaust port since their is a coolant jacket that runs right next to it. The dealer has a TSB on this. You can diagnose it yourself. Pull the manifold off and somehow borrow a tool or pressurize the cooling system. If you do pull the manifold you will see where is it leaking. If this is the case you are going to need another head. Don't bother in getting it fixed.

go to engnbldr.com and get your parts. i think when i did my timing chain + HG(extra insurance, plus i wanted to do it the factory way) the head gasket set and a set of head bolts was like $60. they can also sell you a new head, fully assembled for under $400(this is a NEW head, not rebuilt), and a performance heads with oversized valves for $500 and up

 

see if you can find someone who can test hydro carbons in the coolant.

 

Take the head to a machine shop and they will tell you if it's cracked or warped or not. If it's not, get it surfaced, and get a valve job done while it's off the truck. My machine shop only charges $100-$150 including gaskets.

 

Update, We got the head off, after much cursing and hair pulling.
There is two places where the aluminum is corroded right to the cylinder wall.
we took it to our machine shop for assesment.
It's not cracked of warped at all! He will be able to repair the damage and machine the head for just under $100.00. Wer'e gonna go for it.
We took pics of every step and labeled every connection and fitting that wasen't obvious.
So wish me luck!

Good. Sounds like your on the right track! Good move on the pics and labeling everything! I've done it the "other" way and that's no fun I actually just finished the exact same job yesterday on a buddies '88 22re. Only I pulled the whole engine from two trucks (his dd, and a donor), combined the two with all new seals and gaskets, and dropped it back in...in three days. Yeah I worked ALL weekend!

 

Again with the update...Well bad news, the machine shop called back today, the head failed the pressure tests, too much corrosion. Basicly a usless brick of aluminum.
We are getting the 'Street RV' head from enginbldr.com and a set of head bolts.
