another intake question

After hearing alot of the negative things about the K&N FIPK kits, I've decided to start looking into other options. Problem is that I bought the 4runner with the FIPK so I don't have any of the stock intake. So I'm either considering an airaid or downey intake system, or getting a stock airbox with an airaid MIT (modular intake tube) and an amsoil filter.
So my question is... will an airaid or downey intake system perform the same as the K&N since they are all oiled gauze filters (at least i think they all are)? or would I be better off with the stock airbox and an amsoil filter? also, has anybody tried or had any experiences with the airaid or downey intake systems?
thanks everyone

I'd say just get a stock box and pick up a amsoil filter (or even a stock filter) and just do the deck plate mod

Ditto. If you offroad, it'll let you seal the intake up also. I find the deckplate mod to be a definite seat-of-the-pants power increase. However, after using the Amsoil filter for 2 years, I could just as easily go back to a quality paper filter (I sometimes think that oiling mine twice a year and having to do the occasional MAF cleaning due to the check engine light isn't worth it) and not notice any change. Your choice.

Rick,

If you blot out the excess oil you won't run into that CEL problem. Or at least you shouldn't...
Just sandwich the filter between 6 paper towel sheets (3 each side), put a board on top, and kneel on top of it - moving around to squeeze uniformly. Done this each time I cleaned mine and have had no problems

I've done that each time I've cleaned and reoiled the filter but I always seem to get the CEL at least once between reoiling. Most of the time, though, I can get by disconnecting the hose at the engine side of the MAF and spraying the cleaner towards the air box (filter removed, of course). Only once did I have to disassemble the unit to pull the MAF for cleaning. However, I'll be more diligent next time I clear the filter of excess oil. Thanks!

I am new to the 4Runner scene after just picking mine up this weekend. So what exactly is the 'deck plate mod' and is it applicable to a 1st generation with the 22re?

Curious,

Justin

Check out the "Tech Write Up" section under performance and you will find it. There is also a search feature at the top of the screen. And no, it is not applicable to a 1st gen. Oh, and welcome to the board.

Is anyone using the Airaid modular intake tube? I figured someone may because it gets rid of the intake silencer plus the flexible part if the tube.
I saw it for $80 for my '02, Kinda steep if you can just do the ISR mod, but it looks like it would look so much cleaner with the MIT and you can always pop in the stock tube if you decide to sell.
It claims as much as 400 CFM increases.
It is on www.performanceproducts.com for $84.99 for my '02.

Somebody on the boards is running it, I just cant remember who. Try running a search and I am sure you will run into the thread. I was tempted to get it too, but for $80 I was like, naahhh. There is no way that a tube change is going to provide any more noticeable HP than the ISR mod. So, I decided to save the money for my next mod - which turned out to be a Thule rack from Brian.

It is cleaner though, I agree with you on that point.
