Alternator or Battery?

Hey guys,

My 92 4Runner has a few problems electrically. First of all, my power windows are slower than they are with my 2000 4Runner, but they tend to go a bit faster when I am going highway speeds than if I was just sitting still. My audio system is comprised of a Kenwood HU and an Alpine 200W amp for my sub. I've noticed if the sub is bumping pretty loud, the battery gauge dips *slightly* to the beat. I can't tell if it does this when I'm going highway speeds because sometimes it's hard to take my eyes off the road long enough to see if it's happening. The lights will sometimes dim ever so slightly when the music is up and the car is idling, but never when on the highway..

Does this sound like an alternator problem or battery problem?

BTW- I am planning to get another 40W x 4 RMS amp for my fronts and rears. Do you think the electrical system will be able to handle this? Those of you like Corey who have a pretty hefty sound system, is everything ok with the stock alternator or have you upgraded?

Thanks in advance.

To help with your power windows, you can lube the window tracks and that will make a pretty significant difference in the speed at which they go up.

As for my electrical system - I have two smaller audio amps and a set of Hella driving lights. I can tell all of this gear is putting a strain on my alternator at low rpm's, so one day I may eventually upgrade to a higher-output alternator. But they are just so dang expensive!

Thanks for the insights. So you're not having any major problems with running the stock alternator and multiple amps?

i have run over 1600watts rms in my celica with stock alternator and of course i needed 3 farad for that much power but for a small amp .5 farad would help.
