airbag generations

my little horn problem got me thinking about airbags. i remember when i inhereted my dads saab 9000 a few years ago, i heard something about how it had a 1st generation airbag which was actually somewhat dangerous.. related to speed of deployment.

luckily i never found out... but i was wondering, was there a 2nd gen? 3rd? what years did these come out?

does my 2001 have whats considered to be a safe airbag? are there unsafe ones?

thanks.

You are correct in thinking that there are different 'generations' in airbags. The original airbags deployed with much greater force which could actually cause injury all on its own. This prompted the auto industry to switch over to 'depowered' airbags in the late '90's. I'm pretty sure that the change in standard happened in 1998 for Toyota (I'm assuming this included all of their products.). I know for a fact that my 1996 4Runner did not have the depowered airbags, but my 1998 does.

Your airbags will be fine Lee. But if you like to play around with wiring be carefull what you do. Always dissconnect the battery.
