Adding Rear Differential

I'm new to the fun of off roading and was trying to find as much info about my vehicle (98 4Runner SR5 V6 4x4). I read that SR5 automatics don't have a rear locking differentials. Does anyone know if this is true? If it is, is their anyway you can buy one and add it? And if not what about installing a whole new rear axle? Thanks for your help guys

If you have an e-locker on your 4Runner, there will be a button to the left of your steering wheel that says "RR DIFF LOCK."

If you don't, well, one can be gotten. The hard part is all of the wiring and controls for it. It is possible to swap in either a 3rd member with a locker in it, or a whole axle. Just so you know, e-locker axles or 3rd members tend to be a little expensive.

Where did you read that? That simply isn't true. I used a 96 4Runner SR5 (auto) as a donor rig for my e-locker swap.

My '98 4Runner SR5 also has a E-Locker as a factory option.

well i don't have the RR Diff button so I guess I don't have one. Does anybody know any specific prices I would really like to have one since it seems like a very important tool when off roading

I hate to say "search" but you really should. There have been hundreds of threads on this topic; everything from retrofits to the ARB-option, to complete swaps (housing and all) from donor rigs.

if you are just starting out wheeling that don't spend the money on a locker.

do some wheeling first and get a feel of what it is and when you would actully be using a locker..

a locker isnt really a super cheap mod and you could spend the money on other stuff first.

I think a whole axle with an e-locker will run somewhere around $1000-$1500, not including the e-locker wiring harness and switch. You're going to need to figure out what your axle ratio is also, becasue they come in 3 varieties.

You can look around at junk yards with this:

Always seems to work for me. Good luck.
