I've done a search and really can't find anything, so here's the problem.

Replaced the AC Clutch on my 97 4Runner and noticed that the new pulley is larger then the old one. Called the distributer and they said it's the correct one. Called around to a fe others and they all said the same thing. Only problem is the belt is WAY to tight and I could barely get it on.

Finally just had to cut it off and now the seach is on. Anyone know any other belt #s to look for? The one we cut off is Denso 91840-08708 Bando 4PK870 CR.

I would tend to believe Toyota, rather than an aftermarket distributor as to what is supposed to be on there.

The 4PK870 is the correct belt for a 97 4Runner V6. The AC pump clutch is WRONG.

Btw I am assuming you loosened the AC idler pulley and let the tension down on it? Silly question I know but gotta cover all the bases.

 

The AC Clutch is a generic model that fits several type of vehs...after more research. Did Toyota upgrade there ac clutches on later models?

Yes, we let it down as much as possible and still no luck.

 

There isn't really such a thing as a "generic" model. You should never have to try and guess what belt to put on, or spend days trying to find something that will "work for now".

I would return that clutch and either get an OEM clutch, or find a used compressor. No sense spending money on junk that isn't correct and doesn't work. Toyota builds those pulleys a certain size for a a reason. Bigger pulley means it spins slower as well, which may affect your AC systems ability to cool properly.

 

A larger driven pulley will turn the compressor slower. Get the correct clutch.

Part# : 88412-35090 Magnetic Clutch rotor. Not cheap listing at $249. It goes between the stator and the clutch hub.

With the idler down all the way, the belt should come right off. Putting it on and adjusting the tension is even easier.

If your drive belts are not that new, replace all three now. Cheap insurance.

 

Ok. Figured it out. The sides of the pulley are a little taller then the old one, so I just had to go 1 up on the belt and its done, no problems at all. Actually replaced all 3. Everything is nice and tight and the AC is COLD!
