? about coilovers 2nd gen 4runner

I seem to remember a lot of talk about using crosslinked gas shocks up front on 2nd Gen IFS and un-cranking the torsion bars for a little more flex, etc. and the thought occured to me, why not a coil over shock with a weak spring instead? I realize there is nothing made for this application, but that hasn't seemed to stop anyone here from experimenting. I know the lower a-arm isn't intended to be a supporting member, but that's what the air shock is doing. and it seems to work. Just curious if anyone has put any thought into this idea.
