99 4runner timing belt ?

I have a 99 4runner 4x4 with 3.4 v6. It has 97,500 miles on it and I want to change the timing belt.Do I need to change the water pump also or just the timing belt? The water pump is not leaking just need to know what to replace beside timing belt? Thank you

Do them both together, if you don't at some point you'll be doing the same job twice. Of course it will be easier the 2nd time around hehe.

mt goat has 10x my knowledge (8K posts to my 800) and he speaks the truth....

cheap insurance-you may not need the water pump yet-but as sure as you don't replace it , it will act up soon, so best to just replace it while at the belt since everything will be taken apart anyways.

... and if your water pump leaks in the near future, you end up having to replace the timing belt again anyways, because coolant from the leak will get on it (and it's recommended that the belt be replaced if it comes in contact with coolant). I didn't think the water pump was leaking on my 2002 when I did the timing belt, but I decided to replace it anyways, so I bought a new one. When I got the timing cover off, I could see traces of dried up coolant where it had weeped past the gasket, so maybe it was just a matter of time.

Since the pump is not expensive, and the pain it is to get to, I recommend replacing it now.

crank bolt is a MUST. thermostat is cheap insurance-easy since it's readily accessible. any questions, just pm me. it's still relatively fresh on my mind.

You happen to know the OEM part# for that crank bolt?

funny ...........I bought my 99 runner with 48,000 on it and even now at 130,000
the belt looks great and never a peep out of the water pump.
If and when I do it.............it will ALL get done.

Is there some sort of idler pulley in there?
If so ..is it recommended to change that as well ?

recent images.

Yeah...........the belt does not worry me as much as the bearings in the idler pullies and the waterpump. The belt has no cracks or even signs of cracking.

Has anyone cleaned the front of the engine while doing the timing belt / pump etc. ?
Looks as though the front of the engine gets caked with black gunk and general
grime from being closed in by the gear cover.

I was wondering the same thing about the idler pulleys. As long as the stealership will take them back unused, I'll buy them, then see how the current ones feel. My bro has a company called The Timing Belt Doctor in Georgia. Sadly, I'm all the way in SLC, UT, so I can't shift the job off to him, but at least I've got a great resource. My 02 has ~124k on it, so I figure it's about time. I'm glad I checked out this post because I didn't know about replacing the crank bolt.
So, here's the list of parts I'll replace while I'm in there;
Timing belt
All drive belts
Water Pump
Thermostat
Crank Pulley Bolt
Idler Pulleys (If needed)

Before I tackle this, I am going to clean the out of the engine bay.

Those belts last a lot longer than 90,000 miles. Of course Toyota wants it replaced because it's a $600-800 job.

Also the 3.4 is a non-interference engine.

Here is a timing belt kit on ebay. The parts look good to me. Probally more here than you need.
