Hey:

I want to install a new exhaust system on my 99 4runner sr5 and really don't know to much about my different choices. Can anyone give me some ideas.

I've heard of catback exhausts and like the sound, but what's the difference between a 2 and 3 chamber exhaust?

Need some help por favor.

Where to begin?

First of all, Hi.

It would help to know if your truck has a single or double catalytic setup. Are you 4 or 6 cylnders? Do you want to pay a lot or a little? Stainless Steel $$$$? or Aluminized $$?

Answer some of those questions, and I can be a bit more help. In the meantime, go here to see some choices for a V6 4Runner with a single factory calalytic.

In any event, I have a V6 engine, and would like to spend about 250-300 dollars. I really have no preference on the tip, but have been looking around and was offered a magna flow with alum tip installed for 250 at this place called muffler king.

I'm not sure if that's good or not, and he mentioned something about 2 or 3 chambers.

Ohh yea! I have just the one for you. It's a 2 chamber. A two chamber will give you more flow and maybe a little more power

I got a 3" cat back with a HUGE Magnaflow muffler. I originally had a Dynomax, but the output pipe cracked at the muffler so I had to replace it. I tried two different Flowmasters. WAY too loud....even for me. Both inside and outside were too loud. I settled on the Magnaflow which is better, but still resonates quite a bit inside. Usually only at lower rpm's under a load, though. You don't really notice it too much normally.

I think I paid right around $200. It was a local non-brand name muffler shop.

FYI, I went 3" because I have a SC. You would not want to go this big.

Also, my tip exits where the stock tip was, but I had them rotate the tip so that it was flush with the truck.

I've enjoyed the TRD cat back on my 98 and even found a little hp.

 

Jardine makes a wonderful cat-back system for the 4Runner. It's what I have. 2.5" system, hi-flow muffler, and it really ROARS. A local guy has TRD headers and a TRD exhaust and he said mine was louder, deeper, and throatier than his. Convinced me! Plus, the price isn't too bad. I think $230 new. It's bolt-on, so you can do it yourself with jackstands and a ratchet. The chrome tip is 3" and has Jardine inscibed on it. It's a real bang for your buck.

Thanks for all your help, the information thus far has been awesome. I've been looking around seattle and found a few places to install the exhaust.

Keep the ideas coming, it's really helpful for a novice.
