I recently changed the trans filter in my 98 Tacoma 2wd auto (what a pain getting the pan to seal) and the truck will no longer shift into 4th. It's an A43D trans. I changed the filter because i would get a smell like burning clutch or cooked brakes from the truck when i carried my generator and welder in the bed (about 600lbs if I had to guess.)

I tried draining out some fluid til it was too low and gradually adding more and test driving it to the point that i was about 1.5qts over the full line. Same symptom.

I took off the OD solenoid and hit it with 12V and i got one click out of it then it wouldnt do it again unless I blew air through it while no power was applied. I'm not sure if that's normal function.

If cruising at around 50mph if i let off the gas the rpms will drop (no engine braking) while the OD switch is on. But if the switch is off I do get engine braking. I'm not sure if it would do that if it's a bad OD solenoid.

Local shop quoted me $900 for a rebuild but for that kind of money I'd rather buy something like a 2jzge and drop that in or just find a 5spd tranny and swap it.
