I have a 98 4 runner 4 cylinder and latley the check engine light has been coming on and turning off but sometimes it looses a little power and when I stop it idles really funny and really shakey the other day I pushed the gas and got no throttle response then I let off and pushed again and it took off... Also my brake light comes on as well sometimes and the other day while driving my breaks went out and I rolled to a stop lucky I was in the country we ran it on a innova diagnostics machine and it keeps saying auto air control valve and intake air sensor but i am thinking its something else me my dad and grandpa are having trouble figuring this out and my dad and grandpa are both former mechanics!!! any help/input would be appreciate!!! man just when I get the money for a lift and tires this stuff happens ohhh how the world works... ...

brakes don't suddenly out and then magically work again. Are you sure it didn't die and you lost power brakes? If you are braking without any vacuum it's gonna take 2 feet on the pedal to stop ur truck. Try cleaning your MAF and throttle body while you are it. Check the wiring etc.

 

well... its deffinetly a good idea to clean the maf sensor just make sure you use a maf safe cleaner and be careful with it. May want to pull the plugs and check either the plugs or make sure you're not filling the spark plug holes with oil or water. could case the ruff running and loss of power.

 

Please post the code numbers that you pulled with the code reader.

 

Ill run it on the machine again and post the codes Its running like crap lately and it sucks because I got all my suspensions and ready for install and tires!!!

 

Try to clean the MAF as said and the IAC.

 

Sounds like a miss to me...codes will help diagnose...does the CEL ever blink? Have you pulled the plugs lately? How do they look?any one plug look darker or whiter than the other?

 

The plugs all looked fine and I replaced them anyways yeah the CEL has been on the whole time it goes on and off some times...
