97 Tacoma value

A coworker wants to sell me his 97 4x4 xcab Tacoma. It has 125k miles and is in good shape except, the tailgate is smashed in, the frame is ok though and I think the rack and pinion is going out, it pulls hard to one side, but it is not alignment, as it is not eating up tires. Any suggestions as to what this truck is worth? Thanks.

Totally depends where you live, if 4x4s are in demand it's worth more. If you live in the mid-west or rust-prone areas, used 4x4s are worth less.

You don't know the extent of damage until you start fixing it. Then you'll find it it's true worth but kinda too late then.

Notice how I'm avoiding putting a figure out there. Without seeing the vehicle I can't really say.

It's a California truck. All I can say about the damage is the tailgate is inoperative and bent in, but the frame below is ok. No rust...

Well, I would think in the $3-4k range would be reasonable. When I was looking for 4Runners (they go for a similar price as Tacomas) A vehicle with that amount of mileage would go for $6-$7k.

Just damage to the body. It is the 4 cyl but it is not the old 22r that I am familiar with. I think it is the 2rz or something like that 2.7L...

Oh, it's a 2.7L? Take $1k off the price I just suggested.

Edit: That doesn't mean it's not good, they just don't sell for as much as the 3.4L 5VZ-FE's.

Is the 2.7 as solid as the 22r?

The 3rz (2.7) is an improvement on the 22re
