97 Runner Steering rack

Hi I am about to replace my steering rack. I have read lots of good info here. One question is there a trick to disconnecting the rack from the steering shaft. Any advise would be great. Thanks in advance

That is the easyest part. I just replaced my rack. The stearing shaft has 2 thru bolts that must come out then slide the coupler up. Mine slid up fairly easy, just tap it up with a screwdriver and hammer.

CAUTION!!! Tie off the steering wheel in the center. DO NOT SPIN THE WHEEL, YOU WILL DAMAGE THE AIR BAG.

I did tie my steering wheel off in the center and the rack is should come centered I had someone hold the wheel straight when I coupled it back together, it was not. I drove around the block and the wheel was crooked. I pulled straight into the garage and slid the coupler and had someone move the steering wheel straight again. I also made sure the rack was centered by counting turns from center to left lock and then to right lock. I also made sure that it would go lock to lock (stops).

Make sure you flush the system and use power steering fluid only, not ATF. (with lines off fill and alow to drain) Work the air out of the system by turning lock to lock. It may make noise as you work out the air. Keep the reservoir toped off with fluid.

Years ago I replaced the rubber mounts with Daystar Poly mounts. I transfered them over to my new rack. They take the slop out of the rack, but you will also get more road feel thru the steering wheel.
