This past weekend I installed a new axle with an elocker in my dad's 97 4runner.

He is running OME springs and shocks all around, 891's in the rear, 882's front.

Regardless, I pulled all the suspension components and replaced all the hardware. When re-installing, I realized that the upper links appeared to have offset bushings.

I stuck them in so that the ABS wire tabs were properly installed, but I never thought about flipping them end to end, keeping the ABS tabs in the proper location, but reversing the offset.

The truck now "sway's" when going over bumps. It did not do that before.

Anyone know for sure which way the arms are supposed to go?

The FSM does not show anything useful. It simply says to install and torque the nuts after everything is together and set up.

Are the links you're talking about new or are you using the same ones you had? AFAIK, the bushings in the upper links are not directional. Yours may be worn and look directional though from being pressed more to one side than the other.

 

Mine weren't directional either. I put them in backwards, and I don't notice a difference at all.

 

They are the ones from before. The bushings stuck out from one side more than the other. Is this not normal?

 

It's normal, they are just showing wear from being pushed one way more than the other. I have no idea why it would "sway" over bumps. My guess would be something isn't tightened down enough maybe. Check all the bolts on the sway bar brackets and sway bar links as well as the pan hard bar and the lower links too. Maybe flip the uppers around and see if it helps.

 

All bolts are brand new and torqued to spec. Perhaps the sway bar. One of the bolts broke out and we left it out while waiting on a new one. I'll see if that makes a difference.

Mine would sway over bumps slightly because of no swaybar and would rock over bumps when I had one rear shock

 

Well, I figured it out. Turns out you need a panhard. If the lower bolt falls out, the panhard will sit sneakily right where is is supposed to without actually being attached.
Simply glancing under the truck will not be sufficient.

Once you put that bolt back in with plenty of locktite, the ride improves dramatically.
