96 4Runner 4x4 Issues
Thanks in advance to those that can help. I own a 1996 SR5 with a manual transmission. I recently tried to engage the 4x4 but nothing happens. The indicator light doesn't work also. I had it to the dealer today and they diagnosed it as a dead VSV (vacuum switching valve). They quoted the part at costing $650CDN dollars...does this sound right? Would anyone know what years of 4runners use this same VSV?
thanks,
Chad

See this other thread, same issues there too:

If it is in fact the VSV, then that sounds very high to me.
PM strap22 with the part number for a USD price for comparison.

96 4Runner 4x4 Issues Continued
I posed yesterday regarding a problem I'm having with my 4x4 system. It's not working. I replaced the VSV (the dealer diagnosed this as the problem) and the 4x4 system still does not work. Where should I go from here?
thanks.

Back to the dealer to get your money back if your old VSV wasn't actually bad. You can test VSVs yourself. You shouldn't just blindly replace parts. Get a copy of the Factory Service Manual, and go through the troubleshooting steps for the 4WD system. Now, it is possible that the VSV was bad as well as something else, so don't just go storming into the dealership asking for your money back. Do you still have the old VSV so that you can test it for yourself?

This is written for the older trucks, but should be similar to what you have:
