I've kept track on fueleconomy.gov and am averaging 18 over the past 2 years.
96 3.4 manual 4x4 181412 miles 265/70R16's, always loaded down with stuff.

Tire pressure and clean air filter make the biggest difference for me.

There are 3 coil packs on the left side of the engine and each one has a wire connecting it to a plug on the other bank of cylinders. It's a waste spark system so each coil pack fires two plugs at once. So it's 3 wires. Like was said above make sure you get either NGK or Denso dual electrode plugs.

Just did the fuel filter & plugs. My filter was probably OK, the plugs on the driver side were just finger tight. My highly calibrated SOTP meter (seat of the pants) thinks the performance is marginally but noticeably improved. Having long extensions is a big help, I bought some "wobble" extensions from Sears & was extremely pleased I did so.
Good luck,
Paul

That's pretty bad, I almost get that with 35's, a good amount of lift and stock gears, but you can call me Ms. Daisy.

With that kind of milage,I would replace the O2 sensor as well(the front one,B1,S1,for the parts guys)...between the cat and the engine, put in sensor then pull the 15amp efi fuse to reset fuel trim.....

unless it is running bad(plugs, compression, ect),tires underinflated, torque converter lock-up not engaging..I see no reason that you are not getting 18-22 highway, especially with a 2WD.

I get right at 20mpg on highway, with about 500 pounds of gear in the back on a 97 4wd.
