time to bring back an old thread!!!

for all th epeople who are running this harness...whats the wattage you are running? What is the recommended wattage? can you go higher?

Harness uses 30 amp relays. It is conservatively rated for 100W bulbs per side. I can also upgrade the relays to heavy duty 40 amp units for $10 additional to run say 130W bulbs. I've been running 30 amp relays and 55/100W bulbs for several years now, no problems.

 

isnt the stock wattage 55W lowbeams with 100W highbeams? I wanted to upgrade my lowbeams. is this a good idea?

 

Stock (and DOT legal) is 55W low and 60W high beam. All bulbs over that rating are listed for "off-road use only" . I figure sticking with the 55W low beams keeps the lights semi-legal since it is the low beam that oncoming traffic (and cops) see. And with an H4 bulb, one could always swp in the 55/60s if you had to have the headlights tested at an inspection station. I really like the 100W high beams, they throw a lot of light ahead and since I choose not to run any auxiliary lamps (aside from some fog lights) having good light out of the headlights works well.

 

I ran silverstars on a suburban for almost 3 yrs before one burned out. I also run xenon hid's on my 4runner, I lose my highbeam, but for 99% of my driving, I never use them. they are properly shielded though. there is very little scattered light that can blind anyone, i have seen oem hid's that blind more than mine.
i would suggest Osram Silverstars, they are the European market ones, and are brighter and less blue than the current american sylvania branded ones. this place sells them. http://www.powerbulbs.co.uk/ as far as i know they are the best legal bulbs on the market.
I did a ton of reaserch for my previous car about lighting and ended up with a xenon projector setup. nothing beats the performance of them (as far as a low beam setup, bixenons are not worht it imo, i have driven long distances with them, and the halogen flash to pass bulbs light up alot more (2005 BMW 5 series)

 

i bought some of the delta headlight bulbs out of performance products and upgraded my wiring with 4crawler's wiring harness. my lights are alot brighter than before. i had silverstars and they were alright, but i would recommend buying 4crawler's harness. very easy to install too.

 

Hearing "HID's are illegal in my state", MAKES me glad I live in the south, cause I would take that shiz to court! AND WIN!

 

I am wanting to upgrade 3rd gen to 4th gen headlights in my 96. I don't think I could stand the HID's

 

What do you mean 3rd gen to 4th gen

 

Third generation 96-98 4runner has the old style headlight reflector and the Fourth generation 99-02 has the newer headlight reflector and lense.

 

FYI: '96-'02 are all 3rd gens. 4th gens are '03-'09

 

Your absolutely right, see what happens while drinking and typing.

 

I ordered PIAA super whites and they lasted a year at best.
Now I'm back to Sylvania Silverstar ultras.........at store 50.00
On Amazon....25.50 shipped ! last week!
They are nice and bright!

PS....best tip ever for those dependent on their lights ..........always wrap one old bulb in tissue and store in the glove box.
Saved me twice while on the road.............from a ticket as well!
