92 4Runner Starter

Sorry if this has been posted before, but I ran a few searches and skimmed through the FAQs, and couldn't find what I was looking for. Maybe someone here can point me in the right direction.

I've been having what seems to be a common problem with my 92 4Runner. When I turn the key, I just get a loud *click!* At first, I could turn the key a few times and it would start, and now I just get nothing.

Well, a bit of research has led me to believe it's the starter contacts, which saves me a nice bit of money, but I'm clueless about the location of the starter, and what to do with it once I have it out. Chilton's is absolutely no help...

Any ideas? And please understand that my automotive maintenance knowledge is very limited. Last week I changed my front rotors, calipers, and pads...that and adding various fluids is about all I know how to do, but I'm determined to do this myself.

Thanks in advance, and given how often I have car problems, I think I'll be frequenting this board a bit more often now.

If I put this in the wrong forum, please let me know. I'll move it to the correct one asap. I'm hoping to fix my car tonight so I can stop borrowing my roommates.

Try the link below. I've heard that it's easier with a manual transmission.

Glad I've got a stick then, thanks for the help.

After looking at it, does the placement in the 92 match that of the 88?

I have the same issue, the battery has been swapped and even the starter contacts replaced. Still happens. It might be the wiring. For some reason the wiring gets coroded and does not send enough voltage to actually turn over the starter. If you hear a click, then it's probably the contacts. If that doesn't work get a "Hot Shot" from painless wiring. I have one waiting to go in. It is supposed to solve the wiring problem and it's only 35.00

Sure beats popping the clutch all the time.

I don't know. Check out the pics on the repair and then compare with what you've got.
