Well the 90 AMP worked so well on my 92 4Runner that I had to put one on my wife's 92 also. She even felt the difference in the trucks behavior.

Things like the power windows, lights and anything electrical just seemed to work better. Also she talked about the vehical seeming to be more responsive. She mentioned all this without me asking about it.

Not to mention the electric fan on mine dosn't slow down at the red lights now either.

For those of you who wish to persue this, her are the details.

Purchase a 90 AMP alternator from a Automotive Electrical supply house for a Toyota part # 13407.

Take it home and put it on.

The only thing I had to adjust was the bushing in the top mount bracket needed to be pushed in, (moved foward within the bracket), a tad.

I did this using WD40 to lubricate the bushing and a long screw driver and hammer to tap the bushing foward. I didn't even have to take the bracket off the truck.

So in short, this was just an easy swap mod.

Just have a core to exchange. The core charge was $100.00.:cry:

If all I am adding is a winch and a "not super powerful" audio system, is there any reason to go with something bigger than 90 amps?

 

I wouldn't think so.

I am no expert though.

The 100 amp alt was too much trouble in comparison to the 90 amp for, me at least.

Only 10 more amps for a whole lot more work and mods.

Just my 0.02 tho.

No modification with the 90 amp, just adjustments of the bushing and maybe the lower bracket, that's all it took on both of mine.

 

was this on a V6 or 4 Cyl. motor? Congrats on a good discovery.

also, do you think a bigger guage wire running from the alt to the battery would be a good idea or can the stock wire handle the extra current?

The alternator was a rebuild...13407 is the # that was on the alternator label. It is a toyota alternator. Off a Lexus as I was told. I will call and see if I can get a perticular vehical.

I wouldn't think a larger wire would hurt anything

well if you kept your stock wire and you saw an improvement, then i guess it can handle 30 more amps of current.

 

I just bought a stock alternator that was rewound to put out 135 amps. i did the 100 amp conversion but im taking off because id rather have a stock alternator. i should ahve it by thursday and i will let you know how it turns out. The cost is 169.00. I was looking at the 175 amp powermaster in PP but i think 547.20 + shipping is WAY too much. So im going with the 135 amps. ALsop i upgraded the stock wire from alt. to batt to 4 guage and also (-) side from batt. to chasis to 4 guage. this made a big difference.

 

Sounds like a good idea. I will have to do that.
