My buddy just got a new 88 4runner with 5-speed, 4wd, and a 22RE. His tranny is shot and found one out of an 85 with the same motor and tranny also 4wd. Will the 85 tranny bolt int?

 

to the best of my knowledge it will, i dont think they made any changes to the bellhousing bolt pattern between those years on any 4cyl trucks

 

From what I know the 22r bolck is the same from 85 to 95. The 84 and older bolck is diferent but I don't know in what way. Anyway, it should bolt on.

 

all the tranys have the same bolt patern on all the 2.4l 4cyl motors. they only changed the deck height on the blocks. you will be fine. the only thing is the L and G tranys are shorter than the W or R ones. look at the top of the tranys where the shifter is and you should beable to tell what you have. you could also just mesure it.

 

only the L trannies are shorter. G, W, and R transmissions are all the same length, and G and W trannies interchange between transfer cases, provided you at least have a top shift case or the proper shift rods.

here's the breakdown:
L series: '79-83, short iron tranny, top shift case, '79-80(L43) has funky raised t-case splines that need to be ground to use in any other tranny
G series: '84-87, long aluminum tranny, "long rail" forward shift t-case
W series: '85-95, long aluminum tranny, top shift case '85-88, "short rail" forward shift case '89-95
R series(turbo): '86-87, long aluminum tranny, 23 spline case
R series(V6): '88-95, long aluminum tranny, 23 spline chain drive case(requires adapter to run gear drive case)

all R blocks(8R, 18R, 20R, 22R etc) should have the same bellhousing pattern.

 

G and R arent the same length. I changed R to G last year and had to modify the crossmember bringing it closer to the front of the vehicle than it wanted to be. Talkin 1" approx.

Sorry, now that I've said that, I realise the trannys themselves may well be the same length, just the crossmembers are mounted on them slightly off

Is the other '85 from another 4Runner? Is the '85 carbed or EFI? I would want to make sure the other one isn't a G52 which is the weak sister compared to the W56 the '88 should have.

 

if the 85 runner had a 22re then yes it is the same tranny but if you really want to be sure just check the i dentification plate on the fire wall of the 85 4runner, it will say which tranny is in it.

 

As long as it came from an EFI 22re, it will fit. All 85-89 4Runners and trucks that were 22re EFI came with a W56 tranny. 84-89 trucks that had a 22r carb motor have a G52/G54 tranny. These trannys will bolt up to any 22r/e series motor, but there are 2 problems. First, they are weaker. Second, the shifter on the G52 tranny are 18 7/8" back from the bellhousing. On the W56 tranny, the shifter is 21" back from the bellhousing. If you bolt the G52 tranny to your EFI vehicle that came with a W56, your shifter will be almost 3 inches forward of of stock, and will probably hit your dash.

 

Wasn't there also a consideration of what seats were in the truck? So, possibly the truck had a 22re, but bench seats so you get the G52 instead of the W56?

nope, just in general EFI trucks had bucket seats due to it being an option. ALL w56s from '85-88 were top shift, after that they became forward shift

no trucks came with a carb and W56 from the factory to my knowledge, but there's always cases of mixups from toyota, like the cases of L52 trannies being installed in a very few early '84 trucks from the factory
