85=Timing Chain
I didnt know 22Rs had timing belts...What you need to do is get new guides, I suggest metal backed guides, a new chain (I believe 85 was still Double Roller? someone correct me if Im wrong) and a Chiltons and a Factory Sevice Manual for your year Pickup. Ive never changed my timing chains, so I couldnt tell ya exactly how to do it, but it isnt too much of a pain in the butt from what I have heard. Give it a shot.

you will need to have the head, and pistons inspected, the 22re is an interference engine and its most likely some damage was doen t othe valves becasue the pitons probably hit them.....

I've done it on an 18rc ('74 Celica). The double roller chain knocked a 2" hole in the aluminum timing cover. The crank pulleys can be stubborn, but you can break the bolt loose with the breaker bar & starter method if your careful. If it's really being problematic, a little love with a propane torch can be very persuasive. Just get the manuel and dig in. Things always go back together faster if you bag & tag loose parts, hoses ect.

oh yeah, you most liekly have a single row timing chain not belt and not dual row like others have said, the reason for this is the dual row was changed to single row for the 85 and newer model years... 84 and earlier had the dual row

well after some reading i think i am pretty much up the creek without a paddle. i read that if the timing chain breaks it will clobber the valves. so now i need to decided what to do. i am thinking about getting all the new timing stuff and put it on then buying a head and building the head before installing im not sure yet but i am thinking that is the best direction to go. got to love the fun

A word of advice......get a toyota timing chain. Seriously. The fool who owned my truck before put a chinese knockoff chain in mine and about a year and a half later I was forced to replace it.
It didn't break, but it had stretched out so much that it was acting like a chainsaw on my water pump. Luckily it didn't cut all the way through as well as avoinding complete breakage. One of the few times I got lucky.
Anyway this is a really good place to use an OEM part.
