Question 7 quarts of oil?!?!

I just finished my 2nd rinse stage from my auto-rx and changed my oil. I refilled with Mobil 1 Truck/SUV full synthetic. Much to my surprise after adding 6 quarts, the dipstick STILL had no Oil on it. I gradually added oil from the 7th quart. Adding, checking, adding, checking until then it was empty and I finally hit the bottem marker on the stick.

Should I be alarmed? On previous oil changes I have added 6 before. I am using a NAPA gold filter. The truck is '99 Taco TRD, 3.4L, and 161k on it. And yes, I did remember to put the oil drain plug back in.

Thoughts, concerns?
Thanks....

Roger that. Pure stock setup, no relocator.

I changed my oil last week, so I go to Pepboys and pickup a 6 quart drain pan, the kind you can cap off and take to the dump to pour out. Well, I'm draining the engine oil and I'll be damned if that thing doesn't over flow!!!! I figured there was about 1/2 to a full quart that spilled onto the apartment parking lot! 5.5 quarts in the engine my puhtoot!

6.5 eh? Well, I guess I will monitor it over the next few days.
1.5 quarts over what the manual says? Yikes.

I would say you had an air-pocket in the drain pan. The drain pan needs to be laying on a bit of an angle, (inlet highest) so the air can escape as the container fills with oil.

no air pocket. the one I got has nowhere for air to get trapped. I think it was a defective one. last time I got one from there it had a hole in it on the bottom where the injection mold point didn't close properly and I discovered it when I saw it oozing out from under the pan. I've had some good luck with drain pans recently I guess.
