4X4 question/problem

Hey guys, I took my wife's front drive shaft off of her '95 4Runner V-6 Auto. I was going to replace the U-joints....well of course I assed something up trying to get one out...so I just went ahead an got a junk yard shaft. A month later....I put the driveshaft back on and now the truck will not go into 4WH or 4WL. ???? Any thoughts? When you go to move the 4WD shifter into 4L or 4H...it feels loose and no 4WD light comes on, on the dash...and only rear wheel spins! :fireman:

Simply removing and replacing the front drive shaft should not affect the shifting of the transfer case. Even if you installed it out of phase it would still work just fine, but it would vibrate. Does it have ADD? If the front axle does not engage there will be problems getting into 4wd. Did you do anything *else* while working on the rig?

Flame, What is ADD? I did nothing else! The exhaust broke while the driveshaft was out...but that surely does not have anything to do with anything!??? I had a new pipe and cat. converter put on.....After I got it back from them, I put the shaft back on.????

Neither the drive shaft or exhaust should cause that problem. Did you disconnect anything on the transfer case? There's a sensor on there that tells the ADD system that you're in 4HI. If it's not connected then the front diff won't be engaged.

Here's some info on the ADD system

It could be the exhaust shop left something disconnected on the side of the tranny/t-case. Crawl under the truck and give the shift linkage a good looking over. Maybe as simple as a wire left disconnected.

My thoughts also. You say it feels loose. That sounds like something in the Linkage is not hooked up. Check the Linkage bolts and conections.
