4wd wont shift into the other modes

i have a 99 4runner Limited with the rear locker and im having a problem with shifting the 4wd. It has the 4wd button on the side of the shift knob but i know that there are other modes-H4L, N, and L4L. I cant get it to shift into these modes. its like the shifter is stuck, any ideas? is there a certain way to shift it to other modes. let me know..im stumped

are you stopped
did you push the clutch in?
if it's an auto, did you shift into neutral?

First off, in all automatic transmissions, before shifting into 4lo, you have to put the transmission in Nuetral, not park, reverse, drive 2, L. When shifting, to 4lo, come to a complete stop.
Transmission in Nuetral, while the vehicle is stoped and idling, slide the transfercase lever into "L4". I busted the transfer case of a Jeep Cherokee 2000 because I didn't know I had to put the rig in Nuetral. I'm glad it was a rental LOL.

That lameness is most likely exclusive to jeeps. I know that 2nd gen auto runners can shift into 4lo while in drive, reverse, or whatever.

I assume it's an auto tranny. I had some weirdo problems too (Read Here) It could be one of the solenoids. I got the same input on Pirate BTW....
