I went wheeling yesterday and i noticed my 4wd light didnt come on. So i didnt think much of it, and then my friend is spotting me and says my front tires arent even spinning. So i look under the rig and the driveshaft still turns, but im not good on this topic, what could be wrong. My friend had the same thing happen to his dodge and it was a vacuum line. Could someone please help me out, i dont have the money to take this to a shop or anything.

 

Secure the vehicle in the air lifting it off the ground. Put it in gear and see if they all turn. It could simply be you were not losing grip is why the tires were not spinning. The light bulb in the 4wd could be burnt out.

 

Im almost positive my 4wd isnt working, because i even tried climbing a rock to flex on and nothing i had to back up and floor it to get up on it.

 

I'd say it's not working. A common cause of this is a broken vacuum hose. Start by checking all of your vacuum hoses that have to do with 4wd. I believe the VSVs are located on the passenger side fender. If I remember right, I think there is also a vacuum hose that goes to the front diff too.

It would help to know whether you have ADD, manual hubs, or automatic hubs on your truck. All were available in '95.

If it's ADD, chances are you have a vacuum line at the diff that came undone or is torn.

If it's manual or automatic hubs, you may have something wrong inside one of the hubs.

 

Just to help out, I'm almost 100% positive manual hubs weren't available on 2nd Gen 4Runners...just auto or ADD. I know pickups had them, but I think only 1st Gen 4Runners ever came with manual hubs from the factory.

did you try shifting it into 4wd when you're in park?
That's the only way I can shift into 4wd now for some strange odd reason

 

well i got under the truck and tried to look around. I didnt notice anything unconnected so what could this be. Also i found on my passenger side infront of the transmission there is this little radiator lookin thing, me and my friends were just wondering what this was, anyone know.

 

The same thing happened to me a while back on my 98 though. I checked hoses and tried pulling fuses but the light and 4wd were not engaging. I took it to the dealership by me and they had the number 1 rated toyota mechanic in the world look at it(that's what they said). He couldn't find anything and said I needed a new computer. I got bored one day and disconnected all the plugs related to 4wd under the rig and whadaya know. Try that to see if it resets anything.

 

My 4wd on my 93 started to not work correctly a while back. When the 4wd light was not on, the 4wd was not engaging. It was an intermitent problem and didnt' find out what was causing it. I believe the radiator near the transmission is for the transfer case.

 

Yeah transfer case oil cooler, if you follow the lines it leads to the transfer case.

No, not unless your live hubs have gone out. They are pretty much bullet proof so I really doubt it.

If you defeat the ADD using the link I posted above it should fix the problem because there is not much else that can be broken unless it is something major. I converted to manual hubs, so when not using 4wd I can unlock the hubs and reduce the wear on my drivetrain.
