Pass Step..??
Oh well......just move the stick over the curb while cutting back on the flash... then twitch the big boy over the flat plate and hold on!!!!
Really....I would guess its because its a 3.slow from what I read here at YT.
sorry.... couldn't resist.

That was hilarious!!

Rena: Is your Runner getting into 4Hi ? Is your 4WD light on the dash coming on? If so, can you feel the front differential engage? If so, then if the truck doesn't go into 4Lo, then the problem would be in your transfer case.

Shift to 4L? To pass? Don't you need to be in 4H before going to 4L? I didn't think you could shift from 4H to 4L on the fly... Or do you mean "L" as in 1st gear?

Is your Runner getting into 4Hi ? yes
Is your 4WD light on the dash coming on? Yes
can you feel the front differential engage? Yes, I feel it whe I turn the weels and acelerate, but when I go rigth I canīt feel more power.
What does "twitch the big boy over the flat plate and hold on!!!!" I know how to use the stick, this is not my first 4WD vehicle, it is my first 4Runner
Before I select 4L I have to do from 4H, I do this with the car in P and not running, I know that I have to stop the car to place 4L, and it is not neccesary to stop the vehicle to gear 4H
Please sorry for my poor English.

BTW, Rena has a 2nd gen, auto transmission (auto transmission, right Rena?).
Rena, don't worry about your english, it's fine. We don't know what you mean when you say "pass a step." Are you trying to pass a car on the road?

I think he means stepping over an obstacle of some kind.

you dont have to be in park with the car off to switch to 4L... just go into neutral, car running and switch to 4L.
but really im clueless, esp with 2nd gens.
may be the transfer case as david said.

It helps to describe the situation more than just "to pass a step." In low 4, even the underpowered 4runners can climb a wall. Now if you mean L=Low for your tranny gear, as in 1st gear, but still in high range 4wd, that's a different situation all together. Clarify a little bit please.

Drive on a flat level surface in 4 hi in 1st gear or lowest gear. (record your speed).STOP.Switch to 4Lo in 1st gear. (record your speed)If 4lo goes the same speed as 4hi then theres a problem with the transfer case.

Rena: I know from a previous post that you were having problems with your transmission shifting correctly. Did you get that fixed? If I recall correctly, your transmission wasn't starting out in 1st gear but in a higher gear. If that is not fixed, then even if your transfer case shifted correctly into 4Lo, if your transmission isn't starting out in 1st gear, you wouldn't have the power to climb a step.

2nd gen shift on the fly 4x4 info:
You can shift into 4L if you are moving under 5mph. You do not need to stop. You do not need to shift out of drive. You should also not notice much more power, but it will allow you to crawl over thing easier and get out of mud with ease. You don't have to go in reverse to disengage like with the cherokees either.

I am going to try to be more specific and answer some of the things you tell me:
*lee: "you dont have to be in park with the car off to switch to 4L..." I know this, I was trying to changing from 2WD to 4L in that way, just to see if that is the problem, or to see if in 4 Runners are different fron Cherokee.
*My99: My 4 Runner do not have to much power, thatīs way I want to use 4L sometimes, I try to go up a side walk, about 25cm and the vehicle do not go up, then I shift to 1rs gear and do not go up, then I shift the tranny gear to 4L with 1rts gear and it do not go up, that seems to me that there is a power problem.
*zedex: 4lo goes the same speed as 4hi, also at the same speed with 2WD, so... This means that there is a problem with the transfer case.
David: I have fixed already, but here in my country it looks like the Toyota autorized auto service do not know to much about 4 Runners, they do not know what the problem is; I have a problem with the spedometer and they do not know how to fixed.

I would check the transfer case for sure. It is a big difference in speed between 4L & 4H. It sounds to me like 4x4 will not engage, however. So not only are you not getting 4L, but you are also not getting 4H. But you should be able to shift while moving and in gear. Keep it under 55mph to shift into 4H from 2. keep it under 5mph to shift it into 4L from 4H. You cannot do a dirrect shift from 2 to 4L so that is not an issue. You also do not have to ever drive backwards to disengage the hubs. You should be able to just shift into what you want and go.
As for the transfer case, start with checking the fluid level. On a flat surface you should fill it through the plug up until it starts leaking back out through the plug. Good Luck!!!!

Sounds to me the problem isn't in the transmission.... If it's a automatic the torque converter could be bad and if it's a stick shift the clutch could be slipping, either problem will cause a loss of power and prevent you from climbing over an obstacle.
