4WD Light Won't Turn Off

I spent a few hours today drivining the truck to and from xc skiing and had it in 4WD much of the time due to a few inches of snow on the road. Once the snow started to clear I shifted out of 4WD and the indicator light did not turn off, I shifted back and forth a few times to no avail, the 4wd indicator light wont turn off. It feels like 4wd is disengaging at least...

Anyone know what the problem might be? It's an '04 Taco 5spd w/ less that 10,000 miles.

Thanks~ Gary

Did you try backing up a few yards to see if it would "break loose"? If not, give it a shot.

Bummer. With that few miles on it, it might not be worth messing around with. With a brand new truck like that, make it the dealers problem.

I went for a short test drive to make sure 4wd is not engaged, and it's not. I'm able to take tight turns on pavement w/o any steering feedback. As soon as I pull back the 4wd lever the steering feedback in turns starts up.
It's not a big deal but it still pisses me off. I suppose it's possible that a sensor somewhere is clofgged w/ ice or snow.... If it doesn't fix itself by Monday afternnon I'll be going by the dealer.

Thanks~ Gary

Gary, The light comes on when the ADD is engaged. So your transfer case may be out of 4WD, but the front axle isn't. Take it back to the dealer and let them fix it...

I think starting in 01 they went to an electrical actuator for the front diff, (pre 01 should be Vacuum). I had a few problems with my Vacuum actuator, until i cut it off...

Tell me more of this cutting....

Is there something I can unplug and reset so I don't hurt it driving around tomorrow?

You won't hurt anything by driving around with it activated, just make sure the T-case is not engaged...

Before you do any cutting on a vehicle that new I'd check to see what warranty implications it would have...as long as it's under warranty take it to the dealership and let them figure it all out...I sure wish I had that luxury sometimes...

i know this will sound odd but maybe you want to check your fluids i had mine changed out and the light finally went out .... although it doesn't come back on now when i go wheeling . it's worth a shot and it's good matainece for your rig being that you'll might be wheeling a little more now that the snow is here .

I've got an appt. w/ the dealer on Wednesday and a loner truck to drive while they have it. I'm also going to change the fluids tomorrow since I'm off work and it's not snowing anymore. Hopefully that will help things. The t-case and tranny still have the factory fluid in them so maybe it's time after almost 10grand on the odometer...

So, if the truck were not in warranty what would i do to fix this problem?

I appreciate the help.

~Gary

Just got a call from the dealer. They opened up the front diff and found that the truck was shifting out of 4wd and that the diff was not engaged, the the problem is the acutator that tells the 4wd light to turn off is not working.
Of course they don't have the acutator in stock, so they said to come pick up my truck and they would order the part and let me know when it is in.

FWIW~ Gary
