oh i know i put it on backwards... i'm gonna flip it around so it "vents" rather than "sucks" tomorrow.

 

the slits are actually at a 45°... they will be fine from the other angle.

 

Yeah it looks cool sure but I'm still wondering what you're gonna do when it RAINS! I mean if you're traveling at 15MPH it might just bounce off but what about going really slow and pulling up to them red octagons?

i'll take my chances... i can't imagine rain would damage my engine, or crack my block... i've pretty well water proofed most of the under-hood components... and considering the depth of water i've driven through before with no problems.

If the water pours in through the new hood vent, won't it wet down your ignition and spark plugs? Seems like all that water pouring into the engine is not a good idea!
Why not put some deflector underneath to route the water to the sides or something?

 

yeah you will have a problem with rain here in western washington. i would definately say do something about it because like they said, spark plugs and electrical will get wet, especially if you park outside durring the winter. you'll go to get in to your car in the morning and it wont start because all the rain durring the night got into the spark plug wires and the distributer cap thingy.

 

right on... hmmm... deflector.... flashing? perhaps... i could prolly get ahold of an aluminum plate to bend and cut as necessary.

thoughts?

 

What about a piece of magnetic vinyl like what they make vehicle signs out of? you could just slap it on when it's raining... I think it would be water tight as long as you go past what looks like rivets you've got holding the vent in place. Just a thought.

 

hahaha for some reason i had the impression in my head that you just moved here. those are some really nice websites that you have there. did you do all the work yourself on your runner? what did you end up using to cut the hood with? and yeah i would just make some for of little "gutter" system to keep the water away from the engine as much as possible.

 

i did... i'm from Kentucky.

I used a JigSaw to cut the hole in the hood.

i wish i had done all the work myself, alas, i lack the tools and experience.

i did as much as i knew how.

 

Ford 5.0 engines came stock with a rubber boot that covered the distributor. Most guys remove them and throw them in the trunk - ask a buddy with a Mustang for his.

 

The new Lancer EVO's have a vent in the hood that looks like that but its further away from the electrical part of the engine. It still looks like it would dump water on the engine though.

 

it wouldn't actually pour directly on the distributor. it catches about half of the throttle body. i'll take more pics and post them soon.

all good ideas. i'll check into it while it's still sunny here in WA.

 

There's lots of protective covering over the exposed parts. I think the magnet idea sounds good unless you want to spend the time to fab up some kind of gutter system... just sounds like too much work to me! But I guess since you already did so much, what's a little more?
