4Runner bought on Ebay

First time 4Runner owner, first time yotatech post. Last week I bought my fist Toyota 4Runner off of Ebay, and I couldn't be happier. I bought a 1999 4Runner Ltd with less than 50k miles. It was a one owner vehicle which was traded in on a new car at a dealership. The auction ended on a Sunday and I worked out all of the details on the phone over the next few days. Thursday EARLY morning my wife drove me to Atlanta airport, from Knoxville, TN, for a 6:30am flight to New York Laguardia. After a lay over I arrived NY at 10:30. The dealership was less than 30 minutes from the airport and I was pulling out of the car lot by noon. It took 12.5 hrs to drive back from NY to east Tennessee. It took just over two tanks of gas to get back and at 21.2 and 21.4 MPG it has the Expedition, which I just sold, beat by a long shot!

Overall I am extremely pleased with my purchase. The truck has all the options including the electric rear diff lock and it came with a Manik front brush guard and WAAG rear taillight guards. I have already hacked into the airbox for the deckplate mod and I removed the running boards this weekend to see what I think about the look. I have also printed out the write-ups on doing the gray wire mod and the Fog Lamp re-wire mod. The truck will need new tires within a month or two so I am debating on size and trying to be practicle on deciding to lift or not. Thanks to all the yotatech members whose posts gave me the confidence that a 4Runner was the right vehicle for me and the knowledge to make it so enjoyable!

not to sound negative, but you said that it took 12.5 hrs from ny to tn, sounds like 700+mile trip. You only filled up 2x, that seems like EXCELLENT gas mileage for a 4runner. I'm on my third 3rd gen 4rnr and only managed to get 280miles per tank MAX. I go out to Chicago once a month and that's 7 1/2 hours 500 miles. My current 4rnr only gets 220-240 miles per tank so I fill up 2 1/2 to make it all the way in to chicago.

mr whore,

when my 4runner was stock i could easily get 300 miles to a tank. now even on 35s, lifted and armored i can get 250-265 to a tank consistently.

I'd think a stock 3rd gen should easily see over 300miles per tank on the highway since my mom sees about 280 in her stock '99 around town.

I get 315-325 miles per tank consistently with a mix of interstate/city driving. The most I ever got was 360 miles (almost all interstate) and ran the tank nearly dry.

Edit: I add a splash of Amsoil's PI at nearly every other tank-up (keeps those injectors clean). I also use Neutral anytime I'm not moving (traffic signals, etc) to limit the 'drag' on the engine.

Welcome to YT and congrats on getting (in My opinion) the best year 3rd Gen. With a e-locker it is a perfect project base vehicle.

Sounds like you are already on the right track with mods! Be gone with the running boards. LOL

Welcome!

And just to add to the debate... I only pulled ~300mi a tank stock. I replaced those crappy Dunlops with Revo's and now I manage about ~280ish. If I absolutely BABY it, I might break 300 running the big-red-E for the last few miles. My buddy has a '99 Limited (2WD) and can regularly accomplish 340mi a tank.

To be honest, I have no idea how many gallons I burned, nor do I remember the total mileage. I just wanted to get home in one piece and get a few hours sleep before catching a flight the next morning out of Nashville. It was a whirl-wind weekend to say the least.

Tonight I completed the gray wire mod and fog light mod and both worked wonderfully. I love the fact that this truck has a factory e-locker, not LSD but a real locker! I also tried to pick up some 2.5" pipe for the ISR mod but Advance was out of it. I'll pick something up tomorrow and it will give me some 4Runner time tomorrow.

Wow... do I feel shorted. I have to refill after I hit 200-215 miles. I have 33's on stock gears... what's up with that?
