I can think of a few things.
One, can he pull the lever back into 4WD?
If not, the linkage underneath could be binding on something.

If he can pull the lever and the dash light is not coming on, perhaps a VAC hose got knocked off of the ADD actuator sleeve that engages the CVs up front.

Download the factory manual for the 2nd gens here.

You can get the whole thing with the big Zip file.

It might be the transfer case PDF, I am not sure.

If the shifter works, tell him to pull off the skid plate under the engine and check to see if the white connector on the front diff is connected. If it is, then make sure that there's no corrosion, etc.

When I had trouble engaging 4low it was the little rods that actually move the shizzle that makes it engage, take it to a garage and have them check out the actual linkage.

From: Edmond,
My 4Wheel drive is not working at all either. The light comes on but I was going up a steep hill and my front tires were not spinning or moving at all, both in 4hi and 4low. Any suggestions?

Could you give some more info. on your vehicle? Year, model, manual hubs, ADD, Auto hubs? Then maybe we can help a little better.

Have you first tried the suggestions from the earlier posts? If you're positive you don't have 4WD then you might want to check the vacuum hoses that go to the actuator. Maybe they came loose.

My system has the ADD setup. You can put it into 4 low and it seems to work fine. If you put it in 4 high the front tires lock up"they will not turn" Do you have any sugestions on this?
