I'm currently running some 265/75 16 (32") AT tires. Now that I've gotten more into wheeling, I'd like to get a better tire for offroading. The Trxus MT looks pretty sweet for both on and off road driving.

Anyone have any thoughts on that tire? Would the 255/85 16 (33") work without spacers, a body lift or cutting of the pinch weld? If so, that might be my solution: a very narrow 33". Thanks in advance!

Spring spacers dont make any more room for tires. A BL does thou.

Try searching a little, there are usually 1-2 new threads a week on how to fit 285's on a 3rd gen or taco.

Most the guys who wheel 285's have a 1-1.5" BL to accomodate the larger tire. The suspension upgrades are for improved offroad handeling and ride height.

I already have 2.5" spacers up front and LC coils in the rear. I'm pretty sure 285's would rub, that's why I'm wondering if the 255/85 16's would fit better than 285's because of their narrower width. Or do you think they'd still rub?

 

Sorry if I sound like an idiot, but it's the height of the tire, not the width that will make it rub? The 255/85 is a little over an inch taller than my 265/75 and it looks like that will clear.

 

I ran 285s on 2.5 spacers and 891s w/o body lift.. rubbed only when compressed at full lock with pinch weld trimming done, but I also have 16x8 4.5bs wheels too. you will need 3/4 inch spacers or 1/2 inch spacers probably with stock wheels.

AH64ID,, that is true but you are kinda confusing everyone, yes a suspension lift will allow for bigger tires but without any compression or stuffing, a bodylift just helps to raise the body higher during compression to allow the tires more room to move.

btw 255/85 could easily be added with 1 inch lift or even stock. its the width that makes it rub (turning). height does when fully stuffed.

 

No, it's the opposite, the width is really what kills you... Theres a guy on here who runs 34.9 x 9.5 while wheeling.

 

So, the concensus is that 255/85's will fit because they're narrower than 285's, right? Now that it seems to be settled, anyone have thoughts on the Trxus MT's?

 

Im about to go with 255/85's also. Most likely the maxxis bighorns. If you go do a search over at expedition portal you will find a lot of happy tacoma users running that size without any rubbing.

 

Oops, I read 285's, not 255's. you will have pretty good change at 255's. They are actually narrower than your tire now. Take the height difference,1.4" , divide by two.. pay attention to your clearance if you have .7" of clearance you will be fine...

I think 255's are a great tire. Lots of diff clerance and fits on less lift.

Thats like saying.. I can fit 35's, but cant turn or go over a bump....

 

i didnt say hitting a bump i said stuffing, little different. how do long travel tacomas fit 35s on? no bl, only difference is they have fiberglass fenders, so... my point is, you are saying basically a suspension lift does not raise the height a 4runner because you cant fit bigger tires, very wrong for a mall crawler

Last time I checked hitting a bump causes compression, maybe not full stuffage... but compression none the less.

LT kits allow for bigger tires by moving the tire out, increases stance. Then the fiberglass fender fixes the problem.. very different suspension design. I never said a suspension lift doesnt raise the height. It does, in fact what I say is that springs/spacers provide increased ride height and better offroad control. Mall crawler or rock crawler, you still have the same amount of space for a tire. You cant fit the tire on the mall crawler, it just isnt common then you are in a point of your suspenion that you notice it. Still doesnt mean it fits. Even mall crawlers hit their bumpstops, and will be turing at the same time. Think how many parking lot exits, you know the ones that eat honda bumpers, there are. If you come out of those trying to merge you going to compress, and usually your turning.. gonna rub with a tire that is too big. Some people dont mind... the simple fact is that unless you add a bracket lift, or change your bumpstops you do not provide any room for larger tires with just a spacer/spring lift.

I am not trying to discourage people from these lift, when I get my new taco in the spring I will be doing a 2" OME lift. I am just trying to make sure they understand what it really is doing to the suspension.

 

do a search for 255/85 16 there are a lot of threads and pics about this size of tire (and some good AT models). Its actually better in most cases except soft stuff (where a wider tire is better) the 255s are pricy though, and some think the 255 is skinny.

 

assuming youre sticking with the stock 7" wheels, the 255's should fit fine w/o any rubbing. some 285's fit stock wheels w/o BL, but not all. i had 285's on 8" LC wheels without a BL. however, i think the LC wheels have less deep offset. only rubbed under full stuff in the rear. and in the front, it rubbed under bumps w/ mid to full crank. i trimmed my LTD flares for clearance. since then ive put a 1.5" BL and havent rubbed since...
