Correct me if im wrong but if the TPS was malfunctioning wouldnt the engine run lean as a result. Typicaly the ECU would compensate but if the TPS is telling the ECU that all is normal i would think you would get a lean air mixture and high EGT's

i noticed you have a k&n filter, did you just oil it?,we have seen several if you over oil them will coat the MAF sensor and cause false readings,i would clean the MAF it is simple and you will know right away if it fixed

now that you brought that up, i actually bought the k&n filter about 2 weeks after the trip to the shop, so that could be a possibility? i guess now i'll just have try that out, but still, just spray it gently as normal, and what is that "hot wire" on th MAF sensor?

MAF sensor - Could be an issue but not likely to limit RPM without some heavy hesitation at the top end and it will usually throw a code to boot. If you need to clean it use brake cleaner not electrical cleaner, that stuff doesn't work for squat. You really should ditch the K&N, they have a habit of constantly fouling the MAF sensor......plenty of better air filter choices on the market.

Writeup if you're interested:

TPS - No it will not just cause the engine to go lean, it can go either way since the sensor may have some resistance breaks which can wreak all sorts or havoc.

Just buy a DMM at Walmart for testing, less than $10.

Hey I not quite sure but if they happen to have messed with the timing it could easily be a tooth off. If you have noticed any power decrease or you cant get the rpms all the way up... Screw all of the electrical things as these would not usually be your problem with the rev limiter. It sounds like just like a timing issue.

thanks guys, and keep the info comin if ya have any more. as MTL stated, i didn't think the TPS would make it run lean, as my 3.4 runs perfect up until the dreaded 4000 mark. and i didn't think the MAF would be the likely cause, but i'm still taking it into account and it WILL be cleaned. and thanks for the links MTL, those will definitely help me out when i get everything needed for doing this procedure. so, just wonderin about this, if the TPS does NOT check out when i do get around to testing it, i assume i will have to get a new one?

and by the way, as 5 speed for life was saying, they DID replace the timing belt when it was in the shop, but it DEFINITELY runs better than it did then, and still runs perfect as far as the timing goes. i say this b/c there is no loss of power until it cuts-out at 4000 rpm and still gets great mileage on highway trips (22mpg). so i'm pretty sure the timing is O.K., but please keep the help coming...

I had a simular issue with my trans am I replaced the clutch and it would not rev over 3k... it was out of ballance!
If you replaced the ballancer then it should be reballanced to the crank and the flywheel.

well i personally did not replace the balancer, and to clear things up, the following was done while it was in the shop:
New crank
New Balancer
New Timing Belt
New Water Pump
and the necessary fluid changes that were required

* The plugs and plug wires were also replaced when a tune up was done about 3 months prior to this *

And i have still not got around to testing the TPS with a multi-meter, but i plan to go to walmart either 2morrow or thursday, and to the test shortly after. but please, if anyone has any more information, please contribute, as i need all i can get...

Did the engine actually shake a lot when that happened?

Mike if you have a Harbor Freight there you can get a MM for about $5 last I heard.

naw, it didn't shake abnormally or anything, it just sounded like most vehicles do whenever they have a rod problem - the loud "tapping" noise, along with terrible gas mileage and awful acceleration - it was literally as if i had a 3 cylinder motor at that point, as far as the power goes. and i'm familiar with harbor freight back home, but i'll have to see if there is one where i'm at now.
