3.4 Rev Limit?
#1
I'm new to this forum thing, but I'm glad to say I'm finally a Yotatech member. Anyway, I'm wanting to know what the rev limit is supposed to be on the 3.4L. I'm asking because after a recent trip to the shop to get work done due to a timing issue, my rig will only hit 4,000 rpm before it cuts out. If I remember correctly, before the shop trip it would rev more than that. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

Believe me, I've tried to get that sucker above 4,000, but once it hits that rpm, it's like the fuel is being cut to the motor. I know it sounds wierd, but it just won't go above 4 grand!
So, does anyone know how I might be able to fix this, with or without taking it to the shop?

Do you have an intake and(or) exhaust mod?My rev limit was about the same as yours until I changed the intake and exhaust.

No, the timing belt is brand new, only about 4,000 miles on the truck since the trip to the shop. The only mod I've done to the motor is the ISR mod with a drop in K&N filter, but I had already done that before the shop trip, and it would rev above 4000 then.

3.4 Rev Limit?
O.K. I just went to town to get gas for my truck and on the way back decided to let her rip to see if I could get above 4000 rpms. I tried in 2nd and 3rd gears, but each time it went to 4 grand and its like the fuel or spark is being cut out. It will start sputtering and produces no more power until I get oof the gas and the rpms drop. I just don't know wth is going on!

Have you checked spark plugs and wires? Sounds simple but it could be a start, also check and make sure vacuum lines are all hooked up...sounds odd but the timing belt could be off a tooth maybe? How does it idle and drive other than the cut out at 4k?

It went to the shop to begin with because of a knocking noise that was coming from the front of the motor and power & milage had went down quite a bit. Turns out, the timing belt had somehow jumped and drastically messed up the timing and the balancer on the crank had became loose somehow, causing damage to the crank itself. So all together, it just got a tune up, new spark plugs, wires, new timing belt and new crank. Right now it drives fine, even though it cuts out at 4000. Compared to my cousins rig (97 w/3.4 and auto trans) it seems o.k. Other than that, all vaccum lines and wires are fine. It just bugs the crap out of me that I can't rev it high enough to reach peak horsepower.

well a couple of people mentioned that it could be the timing belt and you just said it went in the shop for a problem with the timing belt so that is most likely the problem area....just take it back to them and show them whats going on...
