Question 2WD to 4WD.. Question

I have an 02 3.4L v6 2wd, and would like to swap to 4wd.

There is a 94 3.0 with an overheated engine that is local for cheap. I know that the transmission will not work with my truck, but will any of the other 4wd parts swap over or are they all pretty much different?

Why couldnt it just be a 3.4L!!!

You are going to get the same response from pretty much everybody on here.... if you want 4wd you're better off selling your 2wd and getting a 4wd.

Aero, I'm with you bud! I'm planning on converting my pre-runner to 4x4. I don't know much about the 3.0 so I can't really help with a compatible parts list but I can give you a couple links. Check these all out and soak up the info.

TTora conversion Tech

Yota Tech 2wd to 4wd

Another TTora conversion

And another...

I don't know if you have seen any of these yet but you can see theres plenty of people doing the swap. Yes it will be easier to buy another truck but if your like me your already to attached to your current truck. Hope these help. Godspeed on your conversion!

much easier... probably.

but I am in South FL, they are not as available.. I have been looking for a cheaper 4wd to purchase and get rid of mine... but not all that much luck. And I figured if I had a donor truck, I can take what I need off of it and part it out and sell what I dont need...

the '94 is a 2nd gen and a completely different drivetrain. I think your going to need a tranny and transfercase from a 01-02. One from a 99+ may be compatible. Front diff, anything from a 96+should work, you just need to find the same gears as the rear or regear front or rear to match the other. Electronics I have no clus so I can't help you there. 94 won't help you though, keep searching. I have a front diff and driveshafts from a '99 limited but I live in ontario so shipping might be steep.

Keep walking past the 94. If you want 4wd you should either sell your 2wd or do a IFS conversion or a SAS. There are quite a few SAS "kits" out there.

SAS though is quite a bit of money correct? And welding....

I figure if I can find a 3rd gen 4runner with a blown engine or rolled over or something and spend 2k on it, I could probably part it out, and then scrap what I dont use, and hopefully only be out of a couple hundred if that... So thats why I asked about the 94... especially since its 850 obo with all the new parts for repairing the blown HG... heads, HG, chain...

I dont mind a little work instead of spending the money, especially since its a lot more of a 'want' than a 'need' since I am in S. Fl...

stay away from the 3.0 they suck when it comes to power , and there are not to many mods you can to to them , they are the worst engine toyota ever made. i plan on swapping mine out next year . just my 2 cents worth.

Thanks for the links.. I'll check them out.

Its not really that I am attached to mine, just am lacking the availability of 4wd in my area... and not wanting to waste a bunch of money on selling and buying a new one (ie. taxes)... so we'll see.
