I'm relatively new here and just purchased my 1992 4runner. I bought it because my experience with Toyota's has been great, and I need a 4x4 cause I want to work in the mountains this winter. Well my new passion has become tinkering with this thing. But before I go off the deep end, how reliable is this vehicle gona be. It's a 1992 SR5, 3.0, auto, 155,000 miles, taken good care of, pretty much a grocery getter for all but the last 2 years and only 4000 miles put on it in that time. Oh ya the timing belt and head gaskets were changed at 119,000.

 

209,000 miles here. Keep your revs below 4500...There's no power above that anyway and the 3.0 seems to have problems with throwing rods among some drivers.

 

190k here...new engine and tranny...Even when things break it still keeps on humming...rebuilding everything underneath some preventative and some cause I want to but it's a very solid platform. When I got it I had to drive it 600 miles on a bad knock sensor and it made it just fine.

 

I had a '90 with the 3.slow 5 speed manual and sold it at 205k miles to a friend. He's added another 40k and it's still running great. Other than typical PM stuff (timing belt replacement at 60k-80k intervals, oil/filter changes at 3-4k, drive train lubes, etc.), the only real expense I recall was replacement of the axle boots. I towed boats and a camper and pushed the 3k lb. towing rating to it's limit. Other than being underpowered, I couldn't have ask for a better and more reliable vehicle.

 

Awesome, thats what I like to hear, a good friend of mine has a 90 and drives it like a monster truck, since he lifted it. The motor finally died on him at 350,000 he put the 3.4 in and is at 380,000. We have taken this thing to colorado, mexico, florida, its never let us down, except when the motor blew haha.

yea dont worry about it. i have a 90, and have been very fortunate to not have any serious problems. the only main problem i have and its starting to get old, is brakes. i go through front brakes like silverware. i only have 142k on mine and plan on getting many more out of it.

 

I had 250k on my motor until the dist. siezed and snapped the timing belt, then I did my 3.4L swap. Im not even sure the timing belt had ever been replaced before, unless it was done with the HG recall?

With regular maintenance, it should last just about forever. I have 211,000, and mine runs great.
