2nd Gen 4Runner Question

I'm looking for a 2nd Gen 4Runner with a 22re and a 5 Speed. Any specific years or series (Limited, SR5, etc) I should be looking for or was the 4 Cyl avalible through all those years? Or was the 22re even an option for the 2nd Gens?

Thanks.

lookin' for a 2gen

The 22re was only available in the base and midlevel 2gen if you wanted the sr5 you had to have the 3.0 the limited was a snazzed up sr5 available in the last 2yrs of 2gen and on (i think).
If you are looking for a 22re 4runner there is one on a used dealer lot here. it has a little rust in the usual places (rear 1/4 & tail gate) it has been there for a bit over a year (nobody wants the 22re/5spd i guess). It would need a little work if you are interested pm me and I'll go see what they want for it. Cheers Aviator

You just missed a golden one in Phoenix. There was one listed on Autotrader, 1990, 22re, 81,506 miles, $3885! If the flipping thing had been closer to me I would have bought it, but I didn't want to buy a plane ticket to get a first look at a truck.
As far as what years, the 22re was in all years ('90-95), in '94 the intake plenum changed supposedly providing better hp, but if you can find one the best bet is to hunt for a '90-93 with factory hubs. Only in those years and only if they have factory hubs you get the w56 tranny and gear drive transfercase instead of the weak sister g58-chain drive combo.
Still kicking myself in the a$$ for not taking a risk and flying down to Arizona for that one!
The w56 equipped ones are hard to find in my experience and worth travelling for if they are in good shape (so why didn't I? AUGHH!!!!). You can swap in the w56 combo, but I think you really need to make sure to get the right year to keep it a straight swap and not have to worry about mods to shifters or interior pieces.
I have a '93, 117k with the g58 and stock motor. I get about 25mpg and get lots of chances to admire the scenery when trying to drive up any long hills. I figure on putting 94mm pistons and an LC head on mine in the future so I should be able to go up the hills slightly better someday.
Another plus of getting the early 2nd gens is a gear drive speedo instead of the electronic one that likes to fail.
Now if I hadn't been such a wuss about taking a risk on that one in Arizona, I'd sell you my '93

Nope. Mine is a '95 Limited 5-speed, there's a gold Limited 5-speed on the web, and this one on Ebay.

Toyota is, and has never been specificly dedicated to one particular type of model associated with SR5 etc etc. Take for example 3rd Gen 4Runners.....they came with limited style flares, but were SR5 models. Any 2nd gen could potentially have any engine/trans combination. Generally (not always) the 22re 2nd gen runners were low level non-SR5 models, but it was very possible to get a 22RE SR5 2nd gen runner. We have on in our yard that is SR5, with manual windows, manual locks, 22RE, automatic. Basically, you could get whatever you wanted with a toyota back when they were made.

Best bet??? Look for a Non-SR5 model with painted bumpers and manual mirrors. Rare, but the best bet for the 22re engine with the 5spd.

I stand corrected

I was wrong I guess...
I agree 4hummer the 22re is bullet proof.
The statements about the limited being an auto only has to do with the rarity of the 5spd ones I guess. I do seem to remember from the old catalogues that (in ont. anyway) if you wanted a limited you had to take the autobox. and if you wanted an sr5 the 3.0 was part of the package.
I know that with the 2gen hilux this was the case. (in the later years anyway)

I think what they did was just offer Limited badging in '95 on what was previously sold as a decked out SR5. I've seen several SR5's that looked identical to mine, but didn't have the Limited badging.

And yes, the 22re is a great engine, but personally, I'd have really liked a 2LT II or a 1KZT

I have a 1990 SR5 4runner with the 22re and five speed transmission. It has over 300,000 miles on the original motor and basically everything else. I would never buy anything but toyota. The 22re is a bulletproof engine.
