22re timing issue

Just wondering if you guys had any insight before I take it to the dealer...I was setting the timing on my 93 22re and noticed that when I put it where it was supposed to be (5 degrees before tdc) the engine had no power. I could get the engine to make normal power, but it required me to manually advance the timing to probably 30 degrees. It runs great at that setting...no pinging, makes good power...runs like it did before. The problem is that it gets awful gas mileage out there...around 15mpg on the highway. I'm thinking it's the ecu...and I'm having to manually advance the timing to compensate for something wrong in there...any advice?

While you set the timing, did you put a jumper between Te1 and E1 in the little gray box by the fuses under the hood? If you didn't, try that first. Also, when you hook that jumper up, your idle should change a little, I think about 50-100rpm. If the idle doesn't change, your tps probably needs to be adjusted. As far as mpg, I'm getting about 14mpg city/highway combined, but still think that's a little low, due to a bad AS Reed Valve.

My thought is that something is wrong because when I put in the jumper wire it is making the connection, as the check engine will blink, however, it does not affect the idle speed...that's why I was guessing ecu...

I vote for the TPS.

How many miles on the timing chain? I had one slip a tooth, and it made no power until I advanced the timing about 25 degrees. Ran it for a couple of months that way before putting a new chain in...I'm sure there was a ton of detonation going on there though. Hopefully it's your TPS.

I would try the TPS, before doing anything else. Check out Roger Brown's Site. He saved me a bunch of work! Good Luck!

I'll bet your timing chain has jumped a tooth. The same thing happened to me. The really bad thing about advancing it a lot and running it like that is that you don't know when the chain will jump another tooth and kill your valves.

I'd say timming chain also & TPS. While you are into it make sure you get some metal backed t-chain guides instead of the plastic ones.

just went through this

hey bud, I just went through this whole senereio. Turns out that the tps was not fully closed at idle not allowing to set the timing properly. Adjust this and you'll see the change in the timing when you pull the jumper off the te1. Tim
