so water is leaking out of my exhaust and the other day it was having issues starting... i have also had oil leaking/burning issues.

I am looking at getting a gasket set of for my 22r just to hold it over until i can rebuild a new one or swap something else in... just looking on ebay I found a few sets for cheap, I was just wondering if anyone had any opinions/experience with any of the the brands

well if price is an issue..... personally from all the research i have done, the aftermarket companies people either say about a 50% good bad margin..... but no one i ever saw when i was researching for mine ever said anything bad about the toyota OEM hg... i got one and couldnt be happier... most people think yeah aftermarket is better than OEM, but the OEM one costs a little bit more but is a lot more durable and beefy...i have the OEM on my truck

 

get the FELPRO kit better gaskets but just to hold you over the ITM kit will be fine

 

get one of engnbldr's head gaskets. has metal around the fire rings as well as a LOT of other spots. he's very reasonable with his prices.

from what i hear, avoid felpro like the plague for 22R motors...

 

never had a problem with felpro best gaskets out there

I used engnbldr's head gasket set when i did my HG. No problems yet, and my water jackets on my head are corroded about 3 mm from the fire ring and it hasnt start leaking yet.

 

can anyone else confirm this?

 

i have also heard felpro have problems, and i did tons of researching before i did mine... i havent heard 1 bad thing about engnbldr's stuff from anyone... also engnbldr is a member on this site... he responds here to emails on his site, postings on this board if he sees them and also PMs from this board... that says a lot when looking for customer service, this is part of the reason 4crawler offroad has had repeat business with me

 

one other questions for a gasket set.

my yota is a 84 pu with a carbed 22r is there a difference in the 85+ gasket kits? or would i be fine?

 

ah, this part gets tricky... contact engnbldr and ask, as i am not completely sure... because the 85+ 22r is differnt from the 84 and earlier... but depending on the build date of your truck and motor may play an issue in this.....

We use aftermarket head gaskets, the surprise will be how many gaskets in the sets are exactly the same as original. (Toyota doesn't make gaskets, they buy them from good companies, too)

Felpro is a very good gasket with just one flaw, it is very hard. Best to use them with a decked block and a surfaced head, if so, you should have no problems. *Bet I have sold 1000 sets of them, but that good family owned company sold out to Federal-Mogul, now they are packed with items I no longer recognize so I dropped the line. *Just MHO there...still a good set..

I will say their failure rate is higher than the graphite impregnated core designs, and I am now VERY partial to the new "slipper plate" gaskets. The success rate is excellent, that tells this old man everything I need to know.

All that is is a full metal shield, this means when the machine shop screws up the micro-inch pattern on your head, it still can't grip the actual seal and defeat it.....So it is forgiving, a nice edge for those who don't have a lot of experience with engines......*EB

nov of 84 would make your truck an 85
