22R-E Automatic shifting problems

Hi all,
I have a 1986 4Runner with 22R-E motor mated to an automatic transmission. Most of the time the truck will not upshift or downshift will in Drive. I have to manual shift down to 2nd or low. I don't believe it is going into overdrive either. When I have the OD button depressed the OD indicator light usually flashes on and off continually about every 2 seconds. The flashing has no brakes in it, it just continually flashes on and off. Is it possible my ECT unit is bad? If the OD indicator is shorting out can that cause problems to the ECT unit? Does anyone have an extra OD indicator light and ECT unit (part number 89530-35050) they are willing to sell? I need the ECT module for the automatic transmission for a 22R-E motor.
Thanks,
David

Most likely you have a problem with one or more shift solenoids in the transmission. Supposedly, this is not uncommon. Luckily, it is fairly easy to diagnose and fix. But, depending on when the OD light is flashing you might have a problem with the ECT ECU.

Is the OD light flashing when the ignition switch is on and the engine is off? Or is it only flashing when you are driving?

I don't think your ECT ECU is bad. Since the OD light is only flashing while driving it has found a problem with either a speed sensor or shift solenoid. You should check the diagnostic codes in the ECT ECU (different from engine ECU). You short the DG terminal (driver's side under hood) to ground and then read the flashes from the OD light. Have the OD switch on and do not start the engine.
